1863

In 1863 he moved to Rochester, where he soon had an extensive surgical practice.

1864

Doctor W.W. Mayo decided he liked the town and moved his family to Rochester in 1864.

1870

By 1870, Rochester was a city with a population of over 3,900 residents.

1883

He received his M.D. degree in 1883 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and then engaged at Rochester in the private practice of medicine and surgery with his father and later with his younger brother Charles Horace Mayo.

In August 1883, in the aftermath of one of the worst tornadoes in Midwest history, an agnostic country doctor and the leader of a Catholic teaching order created a partnership that would one day be considered the greatest medical institution in the world—a place for hope when there was no hope.

1889

Mayo's first health sciences professional, Edith Graham Mayo, was trained as a nurse anesthetist in 1889.

Saint Marys Hospital was founded in 1889 by a local Franciscan religious community, the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota, led by Mother Alfred Moes.

1890

As late as 1890, there were only three hospitals in Minnesota outside of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul.

1900

About 1900 the Mayo Clinic was changed from a partnership to a voluntary association of physicians and specialists in allied fields.

1901

In 1901, the Mayo brothers hired Doctor Henry Plummer who would play a major role in transforming this small group of independent practitioners into a unique collaborative practice.

1905

He and his brother performed all the surgeries at St Mary’s Hospital until about 1905.

1906

In 1906, Saint Marys Hospital Training School for Nurses was founded.

1911

March 6, 1911, Rochester, Minn., United States) was the father of the doctors Mayo who developed a large-scale practice of medicine.

1917

In 1917, the first graduate degrees in Mayo's programs were conferred to two women and two men.

1918

The Colonial Hospital Training School for Nurses was established in 1918.

1919

In 1919 the Mayo brothers transferred property and capital to the Mayo Properties Association, later called the Mayo Foundation, a charitable and educational corporation having a perpetual charter.

1920

By 1920, over 60,000 people came to Rochester each year for medical treatment.

1922

1922 — More than 1,000 prospective candidates sought opportunities for graduate medical training at Mayo Clinic.

The Mayo Physical Therapy Program was established in 1936, setting the standard for education in its field.

1939

July 28, 1939, Rochester) was the eldest son of William Worrall Mayo.

1947

1947 — Approximately 10% of all graduate medical students in the United States had completed a residency or fellowship at Mayo Clinic.

1961

1961 — Approximately 3% of all medical faculty members in the United States were alumni of Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education.

He was a skilled surgeon and member of the board of governors of the Mayo Clinic, chairman of the Mayo Association, and a member (chairman 1961–67) of the board of regents of the University of Minnesota.

1968

1972

Mayo Medical School, now known as Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, opened its doors to its first class of 40 students in 1972.

1973

Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences opened in 1973.

1983

And in 1983, the first class was admitted to the Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program, an M.D.-Ph.D. joint degree program offered collaboratively by Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

1986

In 1986, the Clinic, St Mary’s Hospital, and the affiliated Rochester Methodist Hospital merged as an integrated center of medicine with total assets of $1 billion.

1987

The Mayo Foundation also began a national expansion program that year, opening the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville in Florida; the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale in Arizona opened in 1987.

1989

In 1989, Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences began independently conferring master's and Ph.D. degrees.

1992

In 1992 the Mayo Foundation launched the Mayo Health System, a network of clinics, hospitals, and health-care facilities (including nursing homes) serving communities in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

1996

Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education, now named Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development, was established in 1996.

2005

2005 — Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education received maximum institutional accreditation status from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

2005 — Mayo Clinic opened the Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, which offers simulated "experiential learning" via standardized patients (actors), virtual reality task trainers and high-tech manikins.

2014

In January 2014, Saint Marys and Rochester Methodist were consolidated under the name Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester.

The school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014.

2015

In 2015, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine announced a national expansion of its education programs.
