Responsibilities Collect, receive, and process the appropriate specimens (body fluids, blood, urine, swabs, stools, etc.) in a safe, accurate, and professional manner with the proper technique. Perform clinical testing using a variety of automated, semi-automated, and/or manual technology as defined by current job assignment. Troubleshoot machines and solve technical issues. Follow standard precautions at all times. Participate in external quality controls like CAP proficiencies and perform laboratory competencies. Maintain laboratory documentation and files. Display competency in phlebotomy for all age ranges from pediatrics to geriatrics. Conduct validation, verification, and correlation of the equipment. Communicate effectively to providers, nurses, and colleagues regarding critical values and clinical care. Perform in different sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology/PCR, Urinalysis, and Receiving and Processing Specimens. Perform operational support functions to facilitate workflow. Must be available to work weekends, overnight, and holiday shifts. Primary hours vary with a start time between 6:45am and 11:45am. All shifts are 8 hours. This position includes one weekend shift (Saturday or Sunday) at one of our Urgent Care sites in the south metro. Weekend rotations average every 5th weekend. Schedule is subject to change to meet staffing needs, including floating to other nearby clinics and changing starting hours. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional laboratory services to diverse populations within an ambulatory healthcare environment. The MLT performs waived or moderate complexity testing following standard operating procedures (SOP), correlates data-based knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting testing results and performs quality control procedures within established parameters. The MLT may also be involved in laboratory specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, ensuring efficient workflow and may schedule tests and provide results as appropriate. The MLT works independently under general supervision.
