Responsibilities
The Ambulatory Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the surgical team in the outpatient clinical setting, working alongside surgeons, residents, Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants (NPs/PAs), and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care. The RN plays a key role in the preoperative and postoperative management of adult surgical patients within the Breast and Melanoma practice.
The RN's responsibilities include but are not limited to preoperative and postoperative patient evaluation and education along with reinforcement of the disease process and care management recommendations, coordination of multidisciplinary care including collaboration with other departments such as Breast Clinic, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Plastic Surgery and facilitation of non-face-to-face patient triage via phone and portal messaging. The RN also interacts extensively with the in basket and electronic health record system to manage orders, create surgical listings, and coordinate with other specialties involved in patient care as directed by the physician.
The RN role is key to the overall facilitation of patient management as directed by the surgeon and to ensure seamless patient care coordination. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and a commitment to patient education are essential. The RN must be well-organized, able to multitask effectively, and thrive in an autonomous yet collaborative team environment.
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.

Qualifications
Graduate of a nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.

Additional Qualifications:
Required: Must have a least ONE YEAR current RN experience which could include Ambulatory/Outpatient, Operating Room or bedside nursing. Experience in caring for the surgical patient is preferred. Must be able to problem solve, work independently and demonstrate strong navigation skills in the electronic environment. Applicant must be self-motivated and work well with minimal direction. The RN will assume responsibility for telephone interactions and assume and establish effective collaborative roles with multidisciplinary colleagues. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential.

Patient Care Type: This unit specializes in patients with cancer-specifically patients with hematologic disorders and cancers. The unit provides acute inpatient and hospital-based outpatient nursing care to patients with leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and various hematopoietic disorders. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery, and through end of life. Nursing care is provided primarily to adults 18 years and over. Patients are also followed as a hospital-based outpatient as part of this patient care unit, after hospital discharge and as required by our Cellular Therapy program including chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy program (CAR-T). Nurses from this unit are also able to train to this advanced role near their 2-year mark. The nursing practice in this setting is fast-paced and nurses can practice advanced nursing skills outside of standard inpatient nursing skills, which include cellular therapy administration, research infusions, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, central line care, patient triage, etc.
Bed #: 25 private rooms including 4 rooms that support patients requiring radioactive isolation. All rooms are equipped with a ceiling lift for staff and patient safety. Caregility technology is available in all rooms as well. The hospital-based outpatient unit has 27 rooms to continue to support patients while out of the hospital.
Nursing Team Roles: Patient care services include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T) therapy, pain management, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, central line care, care for patients preparing for or recovering from a blood and marrow transplant. As part of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs.
Emotional support, patient/family education, and discharge planning and coordination are integral components of nursing care provided. Care is provided in a holistic, patient-centered approach. Staff will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care.
For new grad nurses: All newly graduated Registered Nurses with less than 12 months of practice experience, hired into a scheduled FTE Registered Nurse position on the Rochester campus of Mayo Clinic are automatically enrolled in the Nurse Residency Program. A separate application or enrollment process is not required. All nurses new to Mayo Clinic, regardless of experience, will receive an extensive orientation program.

Nursing Team Roles: Infusion Therapy nurses are experts in the areas of intravenous medication administration, vascular access care and maintenance, PICC line placement and care, and are a resource for the Department of Nursing and institution on vascular access care and troubleshooting. The Infusion Therapy Center provides a broad variety of infusion therapy such as IV medication, IM injection, blood product administration, and therapeutic phlebotomy.

For new grad nurses: All newly graduated Registered Nurses with less than 12 months of practice experience, hired into a scheduled FTE Registered Nurse position on the Rochester campus of Mayo Clinic are automatically enrolled in the Nurse Residency Program. A separate application or enrollment process is not required. All nurses new to Mayo Clinic, regardless of experience, will receive an extensive orientation program.
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.
This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
Qualifications
Student or Graduate of a nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.
One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Duties:
Provides skilled nursing care such as; implementing practitioners' orders, ordering and assisting with medications and supplies, operates medical equipment, and charting practices
Lifts and transfer residents as needed, Initiates emergency treatment as needed
Monitors work and performance of unlicensed staff
Updates RN with current observation and completes documentation of resident health status
Communicates changes in residents conditions to relevant individuals
May support RN by completing resident assessments, service agreements and care plans
Required:
MN LPN licensure
AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers or Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuers
Able to work independently
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred:
Previous healthcare experience
