Mayo Healthcare history

In 1959, Austin Clinic significantly expanded its Austin base of operation by opening up another new clinic to meet the increasing demand for medical care in the community.

1964: The Mayo Properties Association is renamed the Mayo Foundation.

Mayo Medical School, now known as Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, opened its doors to its first class of 40 students in 1972.

Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences opened in 1973.

And in 1983, the first class was admitted to the Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program, an M.D.-Ph.D. joint degree program offered collaboratively by Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

In 1986 the foundation created a subsidiary called Mayo Management Services, Inc. (MMSI) to operate a Minnesota-based health maintenance organization (HMO) called Mayo Health Plan.

Also in 1987 the original Mayo Clinic in Rochester went smoke-free, becoming one of the first medical facilities in the country to do so.

In 1989, St Olaf Hospital and the Austin Clinic entered a joint venture and worked closely with one another throughout the years.

1992: Foundation begins building a regional network of community-based clinics and medical centers, the Mayo Health System.

The pressure on the Mayo Foundation to find alternative revenue sources was highlighted in 1993 when the foundation had an operating loss of $6.2 million, its first year in the red since the Great Depression.

In early 1994 the Mayo Clinic announced that it would cut 450 jobs in an effort to save $18.5 million.

When they became affiliated with Mayo Clinic Health System in 1995, the medical entity became known as Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education, now named Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development, was established in 1996.

Also in 1998, in a partnership with a leading housewares retailer, the Mayo Clinic/Williams-Sonoma Cookbook was published.

1999: Foundation enters into a joint venture with the Shansby Group to develop an interactive healthcare web site.

On May 23, 2011, Mayo Clinic and Mayo Health System rebranded their integrated system to be known as Mayo Clinic Health System.

The school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014.

In 2015, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine announced a national expansion of its education programs.
