Mays Chemical company history timeline

1980

In March 1980, Mays launched the Mays Chemical Company, Inc.

However, when the racial composition of Specialty’s Board of Directors changed, Mays resigned the presidency in 1980 rather than participate in the inaccurate representation of Specialty Chemicals as a minority-run business.

Mays started up Mays Chemical, a distributorship, in 1980, and it remained a one-man operation in a small office for less than a year.

In 1980, William G. “Bill” Mays established Mays Chemical Company in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mays Chemical Company, Inc., which specializes in providing chemical products to the food, pharmaceutical and automotive industries, began in 1980 as a one-person operation.

William Mays left Specialty Chemicals in 1980 and became an entrepreneur after founding his own business, Mays Chemical Company.

1983

1985

In 1985, Mays purchased the remnants of Specialty Chemicals and absorbed it into Mays Chemical.

1987

In 1987 Mays bought United Chemical, another minority-controlled company, and one which served the automotive industry.

1990

In 1990 Mays purchased the Indianapolis Recorder, the fourth-oldest black newspaper in the nation.

1992

In 1992 Mays Chemical made the Black Enterprise top 100 list for the first time.

1993

He entered the electronic media industry in 1993 by becoming the majority owner of IBL, LLC; minority owner of Shirk, Inc.; and a member of the Board of Directors of Hoosier Broadcasting Corporation.

1995

The Council also reported that since 1995, Mays Chemical had ranked in the top 20 of Black Enterprise magazine’s most successful black-owned firms in the United States.

In 1995, William Mays enjoyed, the exceptional honor of carrying the Olympic flame through Indianapolis.

2000

In the fall of 2000, Mays Chemical experienced its first setback.

In June 2000, Radio One, the nation’s largest minority-owned media organization purchased these businesses for $40 million.
