Mazzio's company history timeline
The recipe was created by Ken Selby, a public school teacher who in 1961 opened a small pizza joint in Tulsa and served the pies from 4 p.m. to close.
Four years and a growing, loyal customer base later, 1965 was to be a banner year of fateful decisions for Selby.
In 1966 he sold his first franchise, whic h relied on his special sauce and thin crust pizza dough.
1966: The first franchise unit opens.
By 1975, the links of his two starting stores steadily grew to a strong chain of more than 100 company and franchise locations, inside and outside of Oklahoma.
By 1975 the Ken's Pizza chain totaled 100 company-owned and franchised units and had spread beyond the Oklahoma borders.
With a premiere in 1979, it was an instant hit that is still making sales and growth history.
In 1982 Selby changed the name of his company to Ken's Restaurant Sys tems.
In 1994 Mazzio's introduce a calzone ring , essentially a stuffed pizza brushed with garlic butter seasoning an d served with a marinara dipping sauce.
1994: First Zio's Italian Kitchen unit opens.
In March 1998 a Zio' s opened in Houston and appeared to be well on its way to enjoying su ccess but on the third night of operation, with the restaurant packed , smoke was detected.
The ho pe was to have 24 units opened by the end of 2001, but the company fa iled to reach that number.
