    McClatchy Media is seeking an audience-focused reporter to join its collaborative and hard-working Myrtle Beach Sun News newsroom as a service journalism reporter. The reporter will be based in Myrtle Beach, a beautiful beach city with 60 miles of coastline, joining a reporting group that is fun, team-oriented and always looking for new ways to reach readers and tell the unique stories of northern South Carolina. The service journalism reporter, part of a regional Southeast service team, is focused on utility journalism with a mission to help local readers navigate day-to-day life. Service journalists use an accessible approach to write explainers, Q&As, fact checks and answer questions locally trending online. Reporters in this role also contribute to local and regional news and breaking news coverage. This reporter should be able to craft stories based on local users' needs and interests, engage directly with readers online and in person. The reporter in this position will write frequently - they will welcome daily assignments as well as cultivate and pitch their own ideas, finding stories and questions in every corner of the community. Service journalists dig into city curiosities as well as "talkers" on sites like Nextdoor and Reddit. An enthusiasm for working in a team-centered environment that emphasizes support and occasional shared bylines is essential. A willingness to learn audience development skills, such as digital headline writing and Google Trends, is a must. Expertise in a particular subject area is not required, but the successful candidate will bring to the role areas of interest and a deep understanding of what's important to local readers, preferably earned by working as part of a local news outlet. The ideal candidate will also have an excellent gauge of digital storytelling and the ability to work under the pressure of quick, daily deadlines. The Miami Times is a historic weekly newspaper that has served the Black community for nearly 100 years, and Biscayne Times is a geographically targeted monthly news magazine that serves an affluent, general market demographic. We are looking for an ambitious reporter to produce meaningful journalism that takes time, research, and effort to develop, and who can find the angle daily news beat reporters often miss or ignore. Solid research skills, aggressive use of public records laws, facility with data and an ability to develop sources are a must. Also critical is your ability to establish trust and credibility with elected officials and their staff, among other key influencers and stakeholders in the community. You'll be expected to follow leads and produce high-impact, enterprise and watchdog stories for the monthly magazine amid the demands of occasionally reporting for the weekly newspaper in a supercharged landscape rife with identity politics. Coverage areas include Miami-Dade County government, City of Miami, and other municipalities north through Aventura and all island communities in between in a constantly evolving multi-cultural environment that is often in the national spotlight. Nights & Weekends (Vary) Supervisory Responsibilities: * People: None other than self. * Data: Local sports copy, and files. * Things: Camera and equipment, computer, telephone. Overall Responsibilities: Cover sports assignments by taking photos, collecting data and information and write stories as assigned within the newspaper guidelines and deadlines. Specific Responsibilities: Attend, report and write about sports events, performance within professional standards as assigned. * Use equipment with great care, as if it were your own. Expectation is to keep the * camera and equipment clean and ready for the next person to use. * Maintain a "customer comes first" environment with pro-active commitment to * internal and external customer service. * Suggest and initiate, as appropriate, new methods and procedures to enhance efficient * operation of the department as a whole. * Participates in the Great Game of Business. * Other job-related duties as assigned. Qualifications Behavior: Team player. Follows policies and regulations set up by the location. Commitment to accuracy, getting the story and service. Punctual and dependable. Accepts constructive criticism positively. Presents a positive image of the newspaper, corporation and profession. Maintains valid driver's license. Skills: Keyboarding, spelling, grammar, basic mathematics. Ability to work effectively and efficiently, especially on deadline and without continual supervision. Can communicate effectively and courteously. Knowledge: Basic understanding of most sports, including rules and terms. Have good writing and reporting skills. Have good photo skills.
