McDonogh School company history timeline

1873

McDonogh School was founded on November 21, 1873 with the arrival of twenty-one poor boys from Baltimore City.

1936

Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business began in 1936 as an undergraduate program within the School of Foreign Service and today is a global leader in business education, business ethics, and social responsibility.

1959

The first African-American student was admitted in 1959, eight years after Brown v.

1981

The school launched its MBA program in 1981.

1983

Just a decade after the first class graduated in 1983, United States News & World Report ranked the Georgetown MBA 22nd in the country.

1990

She graduated in 1990, returned to the Owings Mills institution a decade later and has been there since.

1992

The most visible legacy is the school’s current home, the $82.5 million, 179,000-square-foot Rafik B. Hariri Building, named for the late Lebanese prime minister and philanthropist whose son is a 1992 alumnus of the school.

2005

Thus began two decades of extraordinary growth for the school, starting with the naming of George Daly as dean in 2005 and continuing with David A. Thomas and current dean Paul Almeida.

2018

David J. Farace '87 became McDonogh's 13th Head of School on July 1, 2018.

2021

His estate, which led to the creation of McDonogh School, was built through the use of slave labor. (Read about John McDonogh and Slavery in a 2021 essay written by Ane Lintvedt, a member of the Upper School History Department.)
