Reverend Peter Akers, in 1833, was the first president of the newly named college.
In 1835, the college received one of the first charters granted to independent church colleges by the Illinois legislature.
In 1839, the Illinois legislature granted McKendree College a new charter, which greatly widened its sphere of operation, giving it the authority to establish technical schools, grant new degrees and hold up to 3,000 acres of land in perpetuity.
In September of 1862, McKendreans formed the 117th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers.
Since 1994 and the installation of its former President Doctor James M. Dennis, the institution has significantly increased its enrollment.
In 2001, the college embarked on a capital campaign which raised more than $20 million for the campus including the creation of a performing arts center.
In 2007, after 179 years of growth, McKendree College officially changed it name to McKendree University.
In 2013, the college had an enrollment of approximately 3054 students with campuses located in Lebanon, Illinois, Scott Air Force Base, Louisville, Kentucky, Radcliff, Kentucky, and online.
