Provides information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
* Determines normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids, and gastric juices.
* Analyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells, using microscopic techniques and procedures.
* Prepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by conducting blood group, type, and compatibility tests.
* Processes, reads, and reports cultures from various sources as well as antibiotic sensitivities and other microbiology procedures.
* Ensures operation of analyzers, spectrophotometers, colorimeters, and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
* Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
* Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
* Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
* Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
* Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
* Works in compliance with all established QA/QI standards.
* Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
* Recognizes problems, identifies the cause and implements solutions where appropriate.
* Orients and/or trains new employees.

Individuals are responsible to perform diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce sound, reliable data to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS:
* Completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Lab Technician equivalent program for an associate's degree.
OR
* An Associate's degree or completed certificate in a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Technician equivalent program or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university WITH successful completion of a 50 week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the last ten years (ASCP) or last five years (AMT).
OR
* Be enrolled in a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Lab Technician equivalent program for an associate's degree from a regionally accredited college/university and be graduating within 60 days of hire.
AND
* All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential for Medical Laboratory Technician.
* All individuals who are newly ASCP certified after January 1, 2004 or newly AMT certified after January 1, 2006 must maintain ongoing certification.
Roles and Responsibilities
* Individual may work in one or more laboratory disciplines and be supervised by the department manager, supervisor, senior technologist or delegated in-charge individual.
* Employees must demonstrate competencies specific to populations served for clinical or non-clinical dependent upon laboratory location.
* Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department.
* Understand and participate in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing; pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical.
* Anticipate and maintain required inventory (i.e. supplies, reagents, etc.) to ensure uninterrupted testing.

* Performs, validates, interprets, documents and reports laboratory test results, determined by department assignment.
* Performs internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.

* Assists in training, orienting and touring new staff and students.
* Participates in Laboratory Quality Program activities.

Working Conditions

What You'll Need to Succeed:
You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A degree in a Science-related field is preferred.
It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus.
Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).
You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues

You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely
You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility
Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

In This Role:
* You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.
* You will be performing diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day.
* You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
* You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas:
* Hematology: Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques.
* Chemistry / Endocrinology: Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation.
* Urinalysis: Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques.
* Cytology: Processing blood and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists. Includes slide preparation and staining, utilizing manual and automated counting techniques.
