Provides assistance with combative patients according to CMS standards as listed below. Also controls disturbances, the landing of the helicopter and clean up when system failures cause flooding or conditions of immediate safety concerns.
CMS Standards: The use of restraining or seclusion interventions must never act as a barrier to the provision of safe and appropriate care, treatments, and other interventions to meet the needs of the patient. CMS does not consider the use of weapons in the application of restraining as safe appropriate health care interventions. We consider the term “weapons” to include pepper spray, mace, nightsticks, Tasers, cattle prods, stun guns, pistols, and other such devices. Security staff may carry weapons as allowed by JMH policy and State law. The use of weapons by security staff is considered as a law enforcement use and not a health care intervention. CMS does not approve the use of weapons by any JMH staff as a means of subduing a patient to place that patient in patient restraint/seclusion. If a weapon is used by security or law enforcement personnel on a person in a hospital to protect people or hospital property from harm, we would expect the situation to be handled as a criminal activity and the perpetrator be turned over to local law enforcement.
If it becomes necessary to handle a situation as a criminal activity and to employ law enforcement interventions, the SecurityOfficer must identify himself/herself as a law enforcement officer acting in that capacity
Ascertains identification and purpose of suspicious persons on grounds and runs license verification checks on abandoned vehicles.
