    Responsibilities: 1. The Surgical Technologist Extern applies principles of asepsis to the surgical hand scrub, preparation and care of supplies, establishing and maintaining a sterile field, and dressing of wounds. 3. The Surgical Technologist Extern manages instruments and supplies for the surgical procedure and assists the operating surgeon. 4. Maintains the sterility of instruments and supplies on the sterile field and immediately reports in breaks in technique.. 5. Correlates the case set-up, sutures, drapes, blades, sponges, and instruments needed for the surgical procedure. 6. Organizes sterile supplies systematically and in a timely manner.. 7. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator and surgical technologist preceptor; and performs additional counts as necessary. 8. Maintains accurate counts of all instruments, sponges, sharps, etc. placed on the sterile field. 9. Provides support during the surgical procedure by passing instruments and other supplies in an organized and timely manner. 10. Handles medications and solutions aseptically with correct identification and labeling under supervision; keeps an accurate account of all medications on the sterile field. 11. Responsible for handling and correctly identifying all specimens before passing off the sterile field. 12. Follows Point-of-Use cleaning: a. Ensures the instruments remain free of blood and debris, which prevents biofilm or bioburden from building up on the tool. b. Instruments should be wiped off or rinsed with sterile water periodically throughout the procedure. c. Lumened instruments should be flushed as much as practical during the procedure and immediately after the procedure. 13. Cleans and prepares instruments for decontamination cleaning and terminal sterilization by ensuring all instruments are placed back in original trays with gross bio-burden removed prior to application of enzymatic spray. a. When placing instruments in trays: i. Separate clean and dirty instruments and divide heavy items from delicate. ii. Place light or delicate instruments on top of heavier instruments. iii. All instruments should be kept moist in the transport container by using a foam, spray, or gel enzymatic cleaner product specifically intended for this use. Soak instruments well. 14. Assists with the care of the patient after the surgical procedure is completed until the patient is out of the surgical suite. 15. Uses standard precautions and appropriate personal protective equipment when working around or handling hazardous substances, including blood and body fluids. 16. Regular, punctual and dependable attendance. Clocking in per policy expectations. 17. Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains the sterility of instruments and supplies on the sterile field and immediately reports in breaks in technique.. 5. Correlates the case set-up, sutures, drapes, blades, sponges, and instruments needed for the surgical procedure. 6. Organizes sterile supplies systematically and in a timely manner.. 7. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator and surgical technologist preceptor; and performs additional counts as necessary. 8. Maintains accurate counts of all instruments, sponges, sharps, etc. placed on the sterile field. 9. Provides support during the surgical procedure by passing instruments and other supplies in an organized and timely manner. 10. Handles medications and solutions aseptically with correct identification and labeling under supervision; keeps an accurate account of all medications on the sterile field. 11. Responsible for handling and correctly identifying all specimens before passing off the sterile field. 12. Follows Point-of-Use cleaning: a. Ensures the instruments remain free of blood and debris, which prevents biofilm or bioburden from building up on the tool. b. Instruments should be wiped off or rinsed with sterile water periodically throughout the procedure. c. Lumened instruments should be flushed as much as practical during the procedure and immediately after the procedure. 13. Cleans and prepares instruments for decontamination cleaning and terminal sterilization by ensuring all instruments are placed back in original trays with gross bio-burden removed prior to application of enzymatic spray. a. When placing instruments in trays: i. Separate clean and dirty instruments and divide heavy items from delicate. ii. Place light or delicate instruments on top of heavier instruments. iii. All instruments should be kept moist in the transport container by using a foam, spray, or gel enzymatic cleaner product specifically intended for this use. Soak instruments well. 14. Assists with the care of the patient after the surgical procedure is completed until the patient is out of the surgical suite. 15. Uses standard precautions and appropriate personal protective equipment when working around or handling hazardous substances, including blood and body fluids. 16. Regular, punctual and dependable attendance. Clocking in per policy expectations. 17. Performs other duties as assigned.
