In 1909, the college purchased a 150-acre (0.61 km) farm for the agricultural department.
To fulfill this purpose, McPherson College applied for accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and in 1921 it was one of the first colleges in Kansas to receive it.
Wessington Springs a Free Methodist College and High School shut the college’s doors, and then in 1968 closed the high school segment of the institution.
In 1976, local entrepreneur Gaines H. "Smokey" Billue, provided funds for the construction of Templeton Hall along with additional operating capital through the donation of a portion of his classic and antique car collection.
To celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1987-88, McPherson College architecturally redesigned its entire campus, a factor that has improved the quality of living and learning at McPherson College.
The Class of 1991 marks the first students who graduated from Central with a bachelor’s degree.

In the fall of 2012, McPherson College started offering graduate courses in education.
Converted in 2015, because of a large grant by the Windgate Foundation, the Art Building now houses space and equipment for ceramics, stained glass, painting, and drawing.
McPherson College is starting the 2018-19 academic year positioned to have the best enrollment in the history of the college.
Financially, the college finished its 2018 fiscal year on budget and experienced one of the best fundraising efforts in many years.
