MDC Partners was founded as Multi Discipline Communications in 1980 in Toronto by Miles Nadal.
In 1996, MDC acquired Canadian check producer Davis + Henderson, which boasted a 40 percent share of the country's market.
The company completed its first United States acquisition in May 1998, when it purchased a Portland, Oregon-based Internet marketing firm named CyberSight.
Although his plans were not publicly broadcast by 1998, Nadal intended to create a network of advertising agencies and marketing companies with a global reach.
He began to aim toward this goal in earnest in 1998, and he directed his efforts toward the United States.
The division, which recorded a CAD 35 million increase in sales to slip past CAD 100 million in sales in 1998, had been built up in large part in Canada by this point.
In 1999, when MDC changed its name from MDC Communications Corp. to MDC Corporation Inc., Nadal completed his next major United States acquisition.
MDC surpassed CAD 1 billion in sales for the first time in its history in 2000, a year that also marked the first time the company generated more revenue from communications and marketing services than from secure transactions.
Nadal began to restructure MDC in September 2001, when the company's stock plunged to below CAD 2 per share.
2003: MDC returns Maxxcom to the private sector.
In January 2004, the company changed its name to MDC Partners Inc.
MDC spent between $3 million and $5 million for a 20 percent stake in Cliff Freeman, completing the deal in March 2004.
In 2008, MDC became the first advertising company to build a capability designed for automated, or programmatic media trading, with the formation of Varick Media Management.
On July 21, 2015, Miles Nadal announced his resignation as CEO in response to an investigation by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission regarding executive pay and accounting practices.
In December 2015, the company ranked 8th in Advertising Age’s global ranking of Agency Networks, by cumulative award wins.
In June 2016, MDC announced the first acquisition under Kauffman of Swedish creative agency Forsman & Bodenfors, forming a strategic partnership with sister agency CP+B.
In April 2018, MDC acquired a 51% majority stake in digital creative agency Instrument for an undisclosed amount.
In March 2019, Mark Penn was named CEO of MDC Partners, and The Stagwell Group invested $100 million in the company.
