Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility’s history started in 1868 when the Antrim County Board of Supervisors appointed a committee to look for land to use as a Poor Farm.
In 1889 the County Poor farm was moved to our present location in Kearney Township, south of Bellaire off M-88.
On July 15, 1935, Meadowbrook Hospital finally admitted its first patient.
What began in 1935 as Meadowbrook Hospital — a 200-bed general hospital in then-rural East Meadow, New York — has become part of a unique health organization with multiple centers of care, and a commitment to deliver excellent essential care to everyone, at every stage of life.
In 1939 the State of Michigan passed Public Act 280 that changed the direction from a Poor Farm to an infirmary to provide medical and nursing care to the needy.
The hospital continued to raise poultry and livestock on the property until 1957.
In 1958, the second floor was expanded for more patient services at a cost of $412,000.
The hospital expanded several times throughout the 40’s and 50’s, and celebrated its silver anniversary in 1960 with a two-story addition and the germ of an idea: to become a complete tertiary-care teaching medical center serving the needs of a population that reached one million that year.
In 1968, a 50-bed unit along with a freestanding waste management system was built for a cost of $700,000.00.
In 1969, the Mancelona Rotary donated funds for a trout pond adjacent to the Meadow Brook Hospital Structure.
1974 – Meadowbrook Nursing Home opened
In 1978, Doctor Rodgers retired at the age of 73 and Doctor Bills became the Medical Director.
1987 – Our First Expansion
1996 – Subacute Services Open Began with 8 private rooms Over the next 5 years the need for Subacute Services increases and Meadowbrook responds to the community need by dedicating an entire unit to Subacute Rehabilitative Care.
In early 1997, Nassau County and New York State worked to create a new public benefit corporation that would provide a more comprehensive approach to the region’s public health planning.
On September 29, 1999, the newly assembled Board of Directors held their first official meeting.
In 2001, Antrim County taxpayers approved an Operational Millage .75 of a mill ($892,000.00) to offset operational loses caused by increasing expenses and only limited revenue increases by Medicare and Medicaid.
2016 – Our Second Expansion opened in early November.
