Meals on Wheels People was founded in 1969 by three caring women, Jean Wade, Martha Shull and Cay Kreiger, who saw a need in the community that was not being met.
They gathered in the basement of the Lincoln Street Methodist Church in February 1970 to serve a hot lunch to about a dozen seniors and then delivered 14 Meals on Wheels on paper plates wrapped in newspaper.
In November of 1972, a steering committee was formed by the organization of Church Women United to learn from San Pedro how to set up a local Meals on Wheels organization.
On January 15, 1973 Byron and Maxine Flint drove to San Pedro and picked up 8 hot and cold meals for delivery in Torrance.
January 15, 1974 – Meals on Wheels was incorporated.
On March 17, 1975, Meals On Wheels of Tampa began with a group of dedicated volunteers who cooked meals in the recreation hall of a local United Methodist Church and delivered 14 meals to people who were homebound.
May 21, 1976 – The operation moved to the Meadow Park Adult Center at 3860 W. 230th Street and was there for 10 years.
July 12, 1986 – MOW moved to Jefferson Adult School at 21717 Talisman Ave., staying for 7 years.
June 14, 1993 – Temporary operation continued at Pacific Inn Restaurant at 5481 W. Torrance Blvd. for 8 months.
In 1993, after 17 years of helping people from the kitchens and offices of neighboring organizations throughout the community, Meals on Wheels purchased the building at 550 W. Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa to house its Administrative Offices and Kitchen.
Here in the Land O’ Lakes area, Land O’ Lakes Community Services is one of those caring providers who have been running the Meals on Wheels program ever since 1997.
January 10, 2005 – MOW made a temporary move to the Lomita-Harbor City Kiwanis Club.
October 2, 2017 – Our meals are once again being prepared by St Vincent Meals on Wheels of Los Angeles.
