Salary Information Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The journeyman experience must include at least two years of apprenticeship experience working under a trained mechanic and at least one year of experience working independently as a lead mechanic. OR must possess a diploma or certificate in diesel mechanics or a related area from a technical school and at least one year of experience within the past five years working independently as a diesel engine or heavy equipment mechanic. Independent work experience must include making repairs as a lead mechanic to include diesel engines, transmissions, tires, hydraulic and air brake systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and fuel systems.
