Position Duties
The Fleet Management Division in Public Works Department is responsible for the management of the City's fleet including the comprehensive inspection, maintenance, repair, acquisition and disposal. The City's vehicle and equipment fleet currently consists of over 2,700 assets.
The Department of Public Works Fleet Management Division is recruiting to fill two (2) Apprentice Mechanic positions. The Apprentice Mechanic position will be trained on the repair and maintenance of the City of San Jose's diverse vehicle and equipment fleet. The incumbent will be rotated through various facilities to acquire the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to fulfill the requirements of this position. Parallel with the on-the-job training, the apprentice will be also required to take and successfully complete courses during on and off shift and on the apprentice's own time with a designated college and other learning programs as directed by the Apprentice Committee. Apprentice Mechanic will also be given a list of tools to purchase.
Under immediate supervision, this position requires basic mechanic skills in the preventive maintenance and light mechanical repairs. Upon completion of the four-year apprenticeship, the incumbent will become a competent, recognized State certified Journey level Mechanic in the servicing and repair technology related to a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment including gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternate fueled engines.
This position, depending on facility assignment, may require working various shift hours and overtime.

Key Responsibilities:
Perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles
Lead by example with efficient, high quality work and strong problem-solving
Oversee and mentor junior technicians in day to day tasks
Develop and implement training sessions, workshops and hands on demonstrations
Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards across the shop
Assist with workflow management and ensure shop productivity goals are met
Qualifications:
ASE Master Technician certification or equivalent experience
7+ years of professional automotive repair experience
Strong leadership and communication skills
Experience in training, mentoring, or instructing others
High level of personal integrity, accountability and teamwork
Preferred
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

Elevator Technician.
This position will install and/or service emergency phone equipment for our customers in the area market. The person in this position will work independently in the field, complete a daily assigned route, and maintain the inventory and tools on their truck.
The Technician will communicate regularly with customers, field supervisors, installation coordinators, sales team members, and other stakeholders in order to gauge the scope of work and provide the full service on the first visit to the customer.
The person in this position will be adaptable to work within the demands of changes in routes and work plans as needed. This position serves as the face of our company to new customers, and will need to provide quality customer service, as well as problem solving, troubleshooting, and accurate and complete work. Includes all other duties as assigned by your manager.
Requirements:
Two years experience installing and/or repairing elevator telephone and emergency telephone equipment
High School diploma or GED
Must hold current and valid Elevator Mechanic License
Excellent customer service skills
Excellent communication skills and the ability to relate to customers, supervisors, teammates, and installation coordinators, and other teams
Ability to work independently
Ability to schedule work and coordinate with customers
Ability to manage installation projects and complete in a timely manner
Technical fluency to work on a laptop or tablet and process electronic work orders
Ability to track and maintain tools and inventory counts on truck
High attention to detail and quality
Professional appearance
Ability to travel throughout the area, different sites, cities, or states as needed
Overnight travel as needed
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen
Physical Requirements:
Kneeling several times a day - up to 10 minutes at a time
Squatting repeatedly - 5-10 min at a time
Walking - an average of 2 miles a day
Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
Reaching and working over your head for 3 to 5 min at a time
Able to carry, climb, and perform work on a 6-foot ladder
Able to work outside in heat, or cold, or inclement weather for periods of time throughout the day
