    Primary Purpose: Services, repairs and maintains Company vehicles and other mechanical equipment including portable and auxiliary generators, air compressors, mounted equipment, blowers and fork lifts. Responsible for insuring the safe operation and continued availability of company vehicles for field forces use. Performs other related, marginal duties as required. 1. Essential Duties/Functions: Duties include but are not limited to the following: A. Services Company vehicles, compressor units and other related equipment according to set schedules and shop practices/procedures. B. Uses precision tools, testing instruments and machines for diagnosing, analyzing and correcting trouble on computerized analog systems. C. Repairs mechanical trouble on Company vehicles and other mechanical equipment. Repairs bodies and fenders using MIG/ARC/gas welding equipment. D. Performs vehicle and equipment repairs on aerial units, air brakes, and refrigeration units. Also performs repairs to air conditioning and system recharging (in compliance with EPA requirements), component diagnostic trouble shooting, auto electrical repair, automotive overhaul, and other general automotive repairs. E. Performs hydraulic repairs. Includes repairs to forklift and backhoe equipment. F. Provides guidance and direction to Mechanic Helpers. G. Performs City & County and DOT safety inspections on Company vehicles. H. Operates Company and other vehicles as required. 2. Employee Qualifications: A. Tests - Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the testing program. B. Physical Demands: o Ability to identify and distinguish colors. o Ability to lift, carry, push or pull heavy items such as engines (using a mechanical apparatus), transmissions, etc. o Ability to climb a ladder. o Ability to stand for long periods of time. C. Mental Demands: o Requires alertness and attention to detail. D. Ability to qualify for a valid CDL Class A State of Hawaii driver's license (includes operation of tractor-trailers and fuel tankers) within the first four months on the job. Must not be restricted to automatic transmission or daylight hours only. Able to meet medical and driver certification requirements as established by the DOT Federal Highway Safety Act. E. Ability to accurately diagnose and correct engine, fuel/air system and/or electrical/computerized analog control system problems, etc. in Company vehicles using diagnostic equipment. F. Must qualify as a State of Hawaii Safety Inspector and a DOT Safety Inspector within the first four months on job. G. Must obtain a registered or certified mechanic's license with the State of Hawaii within six (6) months of hire. H. 1. one year of experience as a mechanic; OR 2. Three (3) years Mechanic's Helper experience with Hawaiian Telcom. 3. Working Conditions: A. Indoor-outdoor work with the majority of work being performed outdoors.
