Becoming a Mechanical Design Engineer FAQs

How do I become a mechanical design engineer?

Becoming a mechanical design engineer requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and then a license. Mechanical design engineers use physics and engineering principles to design mechanical systems and devices. All of which requires years of education and training.

The first step in becoming a mechanical designer is to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. This four-year degree will provide mechanical designer engineering students with the necessary technical knowledge to pass licensing exams and work in the field.

It's highly recommended that you do at least one internship during your time at university. In some cases, engineering programs make internships a requirement. This is for a good reason. During the internship, the mechanical design engineer candidate can take what they learned and apply it in real-world situations.

If you're a graduate from an engineering program approved by your state's licensure board, you can become classified as an "engineer intern" or "engineer-in-training" by completing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Achieving EI or EIT status signals that you have mastered the fundamental requirements and taken the first step toward earning your PE licensure. From here, you can begin to apply to entry-level design engineering positions.

How many years does it take to become a design engineer?

It takes 9 to 11 years to become a design engineer. This includes at least four years of formal schooling and several years of work experience.

First, you must complete a bachelor's degree majoring in mechanical engineering or industrial design, or for some, a double degree. Other design engineers complete a master's of industrial design or master's degree of engineering.

Whether you complete your bachelor's or master's degree will determine how many years of work experience you need. For example, someone with a bachelor's degree in engineering (or related field) and at least seven years of experience, a master's degree in engineering, and five years' experience.

Design engineering candidates will need to accumulate work experience to showcase their value as design engineers to their resumes. Experience can be gained through internships or volunteer opportunities.

Finally, there are many certifications out there to further demonstrate your proficiency in the field. You can earn a CAD certification, engineering management certification, or one that's relevant to your engineering field.

Some popular ones include AutoCAD certifications, ASME certifications, Certified Associate in Engineering Management (CAEM), and Certified Professional in Engineering Management (CPEM).

What is mechanical design in mechanical engineering?

The mechanical design in mechanical engineering is the design of parts - or the engineering of design components, products, or systems of mechanical nature. Engineers, in general, design, fabricate and test components and systems.

Mechanical design engineers specifically focus on the feasibility of a component from cost analysis through to function, the fabrication of the component or system using existing or new techniques, and the testing of the component to verify design criteria and fabrication results.

To accomplish this, a mechanical design engineer must have advanced knowledge of mechanics of materials, kinematics, impact dynamics, machine design, product development, and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) to provide a core set of fundamental knowledge and skills for mechanical design.

Mechanical component design is useful throughout a plethora of industries. The automotive and aerospace industries are well-known examples of where mechanical engineers perform component and system design.

An airplane and a car contain thousands of components, which make up subsystems and, ultimately, the complete system.

What is the difference between a mechanical engineer and a mechanical design engineer?

The difference between a mechanical engineer and a mechanical design engineer is using CAD software and creating designs on a computer.

Mechanical engineers are known for their in-depth understanding of their designs, including the math and physics involved. On the other hand, a mechanical design engineer relies heavily on programs like CAD (computer-aided design) to create detailed models and prototypes to test designs.

Mechanical engineers create and design new machines for various applications, while mechanical design engineers usually work with the mechanical engineer to then produce a detailed model of the system and the different components that it comprises. They can either build on an existing design or create a new design from scratch.

Mechanical design engineers, sometimes referred to as "mechanical designers," prioritize their skills to create design representations. Unlike mechanical engineers, they are not usually involved in the conception of the design itself.

Rather, they are given specifications to create a model or prototype that can be used to give a customer. This allows the customer to approve the final design or product before any construction or manufacturing commenced.

What qualifications do you need to be a design engineer?

The qualifications needed to be a design engineer are a college degree and practical experience using your craft. Becoming a design engineer requires hard work, and the discipline is competitive, so it is valuable to have relevant experience to showcase your ability.

All prospective design engineers will need a bachelor's degree in design engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or product design engineering technology. During this time, you're going to want to learn all the software related to your field of choice, including CAD, which is a 3D modeling program.

During your junior and senior years, you should apply for internships in the field(s) that you wish to work in. An internship will help you apply what you learned in the real world, and it will make it easier to land an entry-level position.

Additional skills needed for a design engineer include:

  • Strong working knowledge of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software

  • Knowledge of the industries you're working in, whether that's construction, architecture or mechanical engineering, or other disciplines

  • The ability to think outside the box
