Job DescriptionDescription:
The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, qualification, and certification of aerospace, commercial and military components that include both metallic and non-metallic (composite and polymer) materials. Responsibilities will relate to understanding the performance parameters of the subject component, identifying methods of conducting qualification testing to ensure compliance with these identified performance parameters, and documentation of test results and certification reports. The Design Engineer also works to ensure manufacturability of new designs in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineering to transition items into production. Design Engineers commonly work closely with assigned customers to ensure all customer needs are addressed and requirements are captured in design documentation.
The successful candidate must be “hands on” and able to work both independently and collaboratively, bringing their knowledge of engineering principles and product development approaches to deliver engineering solutions and product improvements. The “hands on” philosophy will include learning to fabricate various SMR product types, conducting physical testing, performing reverse engineering activities, and conducting on-site visits with customers.
This position requires the ability to access and work on ITAR-controlled products and technical data. Applicants must be U.S. Persons as defined by ITAR (U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident).
Responsibilities
Design support at all stages of the design process from initial requirements capture and proposal preparation, through detail design, manufacture, and qualification within a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
Ensuring adherence to the design process while meeting schedule requirements.
Developing optimized product designs in terms of cost, weight and robustness by challenging existing designs and offering new ideas.
Liaising with customers and suppliers to resolve design issues.
Provide presentations internally to SMR management and externally to customers for design reviews.
Delivering high quality manufacturing data packages and manufacturing drawings.
Ensure the product design is complete in terms of addressing all customer and regulatory requirements.
Being involved in problem solving activities throughout the manufacturing, qualification and ‘in service' phases of a project.
Support the Manufacturing Engineering team with respect to transitioning designs into production.
If material qualification testing is required for FAA / customer consideration, develop and oversee the test plans.
Collaborate with sales and customers to understand needed technology for future applications.
Contribute to efforts to secure and protect the intellectual property of the business.
Supports relationships through strong communication skills with internal and external stakeholders

Perform analysis, design, or test of one or more moderately complex materials (including energetics), structural components, and control systems for propulsion systems. Apply engineering principles, industry standards, company standards and customer requirements to develop propulsion systems (electric, solid/liquid fuel rocket, air-breathing, thrusters) for application in launch vehicles, missile systems, and space mission systems. Ballistic Analysis Engineers work in the exciting and challenging world of tactical propulsion. Responsibilities center on, but are not limited to, the use of a variety of computer simulation tools to predict, optimize, and monitor the performance of solid rocket motor designs.
