Novelis in Guthrie, KY has an opportunity to participate in our on-site summer 2026 internship. The team is seeking a MechanicalEngineering Intern that can join the team for approximately 12 weeks. The person in this role will have the opportunity to participate in relevant work and gain hands on industry experience. The intern will report to the Engineering Leader and will gain experience with our local engineering team.
Responsibilities:
Learn about industrial machinery, mechanical power transmission systems, and pumping systems.
Provide support for various Mechanical or Reliability Engineering Projects.
Perform Engineering drawing modifications.
Troubleshoot a variety of industrial manufacturing equipment including aluminum rolling lines, mobile equipment, and furnaces.
Work under the supervision of staff engineers to implement the latest reliability and maintenance standards to equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Enrolled in an accredited 4-year University.
Must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or recent Graduate.
Interested in gaining hands-on industry experience prior to graduation.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills which are essential for interacting with all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

You will be mentored to initiate and participate in the containment and validation of the robustness of the containment when necessary
You will learn to update the APU quality tracking charts
You will perform the revision of the control plan after an issue
You will update the quality documents following a process related change
What You Should Have
You are currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Engineering Technology
You should have completed Sophomore level / 2nd year of undergraduate studies at an accredited college or university
You preferably have prior internship or co-op experience

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reads blueprints and sets up various machines in proper working order.
Maintains various machines (both mechanical and/or CNC) in proper working order.
Repairs, remakes, or creates new tools as appropriate.
Checks work performed to ensure quality.
Read and follow Quality Control charts and make necessary adjustments to machines in order to comply with existing company policies of product quality assurance.
Ability to detect problems while machine is in operation.
Can complete complex set-ups and make difficult adjustments on a wide variety of machines in the department.
Use comparator and other equipment to test parts for quality.
Test parts using Statistical Process Control (SPC).
Make and read SPC charts.
Check loads and rate of springs and make necessary adjustments.
Ensure that parts produced are within the customer's tolerance limits.
Train lower-level employees in using and understanding SPC.
Lifting requirement up to 45lbs.
JOB SKILLS:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
1-3 years manufacturing experience preferred.
Perform basic mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
Ability to operate machine shop equipment such as drill press, engine lathe, surface grinder and milling machine.
Ability to use machine shop tools such as a micrometer and caliper accurately.
Be able to understand the difference in types of springs produced and differences in the types of wires used in production.
Knowledge of proper oven temperatures for stress relieving and the effect stress relieving has on different types of wire materials.
Ability to be on time, dependable and reliable.
Ability to pay close attention to detail.
Ability to stand and be in motion throughout the shift.
