Horwitz is seeking motivated and professional students for our full-time Project Engineer position and Engineering Internship Program. This hands-on program provides real-world experience across various engineering disciplines, including Estimating, Preconstruction, Construction, and Design. Graduates/ Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and estimators, gaining valuable skills and insights in the field of mechanical engineering. RESPONSIBLITIES/DUTIES BY DEPARTMENT: These responsibilities generally describe the nature of the position and may not be all inclusive: Estimating Analyze blueprints and perform system take-offs using estimating software. Assist in preparing project estimates in Microsoft Excel with support from estimators and pre-construction managers. Participate in worksite walkthroughs on active construction job sites to understand estimating processes. Preconstruction Manage and solicit Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for project planning. Learn to size and select key mechanical HVAC equipment. Attend job site meetings and walkthroughs, supporting the Preconstruction Manager. Assist in project estimating and gain insight into Horwitz's sales process, including equipment selection and procurement. Construction Join project managers on job site meetings and walkthroughs. Support project management on various projects by preparing O&M manuals, performing Revit modeling, and conducting load calculations. Provide additional support during vacation staffing to maintain project continuity. Design Perform BTU load calculations to assist in equipment sizing for specific projects. Use drafting software (e.g., Revit) to create permit and installation-level drawings. Conduct field visits with lead designers to document existing equipment and site details. Engage in team meetings and research to ensure code compliance and design accuracy. Perform other duties as assigned. Internship Description The Engineering Intern is responsible for working on various manufacturing engineering assignments under the guidance of experienced engineers. Observes and /or performs hands on work based on mentor's comfort level of intern's comprehension of safety, quality, and demonstrated good work ethics to perform tasks. Key Roles and Responsibilities The primary duties and responsibilities of the Engineering Intern consist of but are not limited to: Part Cost Estimation Provides assistance to departmental teams across the company, working closely with Engineers. Analyzes data and prepares reports. Observes and may participate in customer and vendor interaction. Observes/analyzes and makes recommendations regarding proposed designs to assure that products can be produced in conformance with specifications and customer requirements. Part Manufacturing Process Development Assist in the collaboration with engineering to modify processes by which products/deliverables are manufactured or assembled. Assist with assembly, inspection, blasting, finishing, and machining operations (which may include production work). Assists Engineering team with part modeling and running 3D printer. Assists with the creation of working drawings while utilizing GD&T. Observes/participates in meetings on the development of machining processes. Troubleshoot problems with production and engineering; assists in taking corrective action where needed. Troubleshoots and maintains operational software. Continuous Improvement/Special Project Assistance Actively assists/participates in continuous improvement and special projects. Assists in design/designs fixturing to facilitate machining, inspection, finishing and/or assembly operations. Works with data collection software; data entry and updating of information. Assists and mentor's students in the Youth Skills Training Program. Requirements Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Working toward a bachelor's degree in engineering or related Science and Technical degrees (entering junior or senior year preferred). In good academic standing (2.50+ GPA). Drafting & CAD (CREO or SolidWorks) modeling experience preferred. Experience with g-code programming a plus. Lean manufacturing experience preferred. Knowledge of inspection equipment (metrology) a plus. Competencies Ability to read and interpret documents, reports, engineering drawings, operation and maintenance instructions, and user manuals. The Mechanical Engineering Technician /R&D Lab Lead uses their advanced technical skills and hands-on experience to work closely with R&D Engineers during medical device development while providing leadership and direction for all R&D labs. They support project teams through device prototype building, test equipment and manufacturing equipment design and fabrication, 3D modeling and drafting, as well as supporting troubleshooting of mechanical designs. They utilize basic manual machining methods as well as 3D printing technologies to support prototype, test fixture, and manufacturing fixture development. They ensure that R&D labs are compliant with industry and company standards, and are well organized, well stocked, and ready for fast-paced engineering activities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assemble, rework, test, and troubleshoot mechanical components, assemblies, and prototypes for medical devices Manage centralized resource for 3D printing of prototype parts and assemblies, including ownership of 3D printing area to promote a clean and effective workspace, as well as material management and printer maintenance. Manage centralized resource for simple fixture and prototyping machining utilizing manual machining methods (mill, lathe, etc.). Manages machine shop area to promote a clean and effective workspace. Generate and refine 3D models and engineering drawings for fixtures, equipment, components, and device assemblies. Read, interpret, and assist in developing and refining assembly and test instructions, engineering prints, and schematics Set up, operate, troubleshoot and repair lab equipment, test equipment, and fixtures. Requirements Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field; Bachelor's degree preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience in a laboratory environment, preferably in the medical device industry. Strong leadership skills with experience managing a team or projects. Familiarity with mechanical testing methods, equipment, and regulatory standards. Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
