Mechanical superintendent job description

Ideally coming from a background in wastewater treament projects, this person will schedule, coordinate and supervise production and workforce engaged in one assigned project tasks, on a single construction project.

Supervises assigned project work and liaises between field engineering, estimating, and workforce to ensure project compliance with contract drawings and specifications.

Plans work methods, materials, equipment needs and work schedule for assigned project work. Reviews daily work schedule with direct reports and updates weekly schedule from project feedback.

Reviews and understands the project specifications to support job set up activities. Works with work crews, field engineers and local utility companies to identify hazardous areas on job site.

Forecasts the work schedule to identify possible issues and provides technical or scheduling recommendations to mitigate production issues.

Provides technical input to identify and resolve project risks including construction methods, work plan and material requirements, safety and schedule activities. Documents daily activities and meeting notes using Company approved document methods.
Performs additional assignments per management's direction. Presents production work plan during initial project meeting to ensure all project crews and leaders are in alignment. Coordinates with internal equipment team and external vendors to ensure that project work is equipped with appropriate equipment and material quantities to complete production within assigned budget and schedule. Coordinates with internal and external departments to ensure all mandated inspections are completed within requested timeframes. Supports and promotes strict adherence to safety and process controls regarding operating equipment, worksite safety and documentation requirements. Responsibility includes recommending training needs identified on jobsite. Supervises sub-contractor production and workforce regarding assigned project work. Recommends work schedule or work method adjustments regarding sub-contractor activities, as needed. Coordinates project close out activities in line with Company standards and Owner checklist requirements. Maintains knowledge of Company values and strategic plan.


8+ years of heavy civil construction experience required. 5+ years construction management experience required. Experience working as a Mechanical Superintendent preferred. Wastewater treatment facility project expereince preferred. Bachelor's Degree a plus. Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certification preferred. Valid Driver's License. Strong written, verbal and presentation communication skills required. Strong leadership capability with internal drive to mentor and grow internal talent. Growing expertise in a specialized construction type. Advanced knowledge of construction site equipment operation and maintenance requirements. Advanced knowledge of construction site safety protocols and proven ability to enforce project safety programs. Knowledge and understanding of local union or prevailing wage rules. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret standards and contract specific plans and specifications. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics, and fundamentals geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

The Mechanical Superintendent is responsible for directing, planning, and managing the work for the mechanical scope to keep the project ahead of schedule, within budget, and in compliance with safety polices. This includes updating work progress, managing labor costs, and coordinating subcontractor and self-perform work.

Responsible for ensuring a safe workplace remains the top priority by partnering with the Safety department, Safety committee, and Project Management to support policies, procedures and practices for establishing a safe workplace.

Control job progress by managing subcontractors, solving problems and conflicts, using proper documentation, quality control and safety control techniques on the job.

Control self-perform team, sizing the project team and equipment in accordance to work needs, maintaining labor tracking and production.

Oversee daily field productivity, labor control, quality control and scheduling to ensure accurate and updated construction schedules and budgets are being met.

Responsible for coordinating deliveries to be dropped off at the designated yards, ensuring all material packing slips are accurate and material received is in accordance with the quality defined in the supply agreement.

Responsible for inventory control, ensure material storage properly according to vendor requirements, and maintain tracking of the material check-out.
Prevent deficiencies through pre-construction quality control inspection. Prevent rework, recognize any potential pattern of rework and develop solutions to eliminate it. Review tests and inspection reports submitted by inspector. Identifying non-confirming results and coordinating remedies and reparations. Inspect the work to establish a final punch list. Work with field and project management to address cost and schedule concerns. Take an active part in job start/job close meetings. Communicate regularly with Project Management to troubleshoot job challenges and update job status. Communicate and enforce company policies and procedures with field personnel and subcontractors. Know the key operational details of the subcontract and hold the subcontractor accountable to their agreement. Maintain and enforce discipline throughout the jobsite. Display leadership by being a good role model and striving to promote a positive attitude at all times. Always act in a professional manner. Other unlisted duties will be assigned.


Job Requirements
5-10 years of experience in energy projects is preferred Considerable knowledge of mechanical construction tools, machinery methods and procedures Prior experience in successfully leading, mentoring, and training Field Teams Highly organized Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships Strong written and verbal communication skills Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team Understanding of construction methods, scheduling and blueprint reading Ability to write reports and internal and external correspondences. Ability to estimate and prepare change orders. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and a part of a team Detail-oriented Willing to travel OSHA Safety knowledge Moderate proficiency operating Primavera 6 CPM scheduling software, Procore and/or Blue Beam is highly preferred Moderate proficiency operating MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature. Some exposure to outdoors with changing weather conditions such as rain, sun, snow, and wind. Ability to physically maneuver by foot minor obstacles at construction projects Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and work with the fingers

- Supervise Foremen and/or craft activities that include determining the method of construction, manpower levels, material quantities, equipment, work schedules and documenting actual hours worked.

- Review material take-off's, layout appropriate systems and make isometric and schematic sketches from blueprints, specifications, submittals and job orders. Periodically inspect work in progress and completed work to insure conformance to specifications.

- Understand and adhere to all construction processes (including lean processes) that are designed to help complete projects safely, with a high standard of quality with expected productivity. Periodically confirms earned value of work and correctness of Forecasted Percent Completions.

- Maintain liaison with engineering, estimating, purchasing, and planning teams to ensure work complies with drawings, specifications and schedule.

- Advise senior level management and project management of potential problems, work interferences, schedule difficulties, etc. Assist in circumventing and resolving such problems as required. Serve as the final trade technical expert on items/issues that are elevated from the field.

- Ensure appropriate team members are aware of all contract key terms, conditions, scope, inclusions and exclusions.

- Perform other Senior Superintendent responsibilities as required.What You Need for this PositionEXPERIENCE:

-5 + years in mechanical contracting with five 15 years working as a foreman, superintendent or similar function.

- Possesses associated licenses and/or certifications required by trade for the position, i.e. Masters license for plumbers.

- Has well-rounded multiple trade experience since supervision of more than one trade will be required.

- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, submittals, specifications, details and job orders.
- Ability to perform a variety of duties which may often change, repeat tasks of short duration according to a set procedure and work within precise limits and -standards of numerical accuracy.
