The Construction Technician II works with the construction team on outside plant projects. The position assists with the installation, maintenance and repair of aerial and underground infrastructure to include fiber optic cable, coax, copper, conduits, other associated facilities utilizing appropriate construction equipment. What you will do to contribute to the company's success Installs underground conduit, handholes, pedestals, cabinets and row markers as part of the overall construction application to install cables. Methods to include trenching, plowing, sawing, digging and horizontal drilling. Places underground pipe, innerducts, and vaults as part of the overall construction application to install cables. Conducts potholing (construction method that includes vacuum excavation) of utilities in work areas. Installs aerial cable, utility poles and associated hardware. Frames utility poles and completes utility pole transfers of existing cables to new pole location. Ability to climb utility poles or utilize extension ladder when needed. Operates crew vehicles, vacuum excavation equipment, conduit trailers, fiber trailers, air compressors, backhoe/mini-excavator/plow/directional drill and other tools and equipment normally used in aerial and underground construction activities. Pulls various types of cables, including, but not limited to fiber, coax and copper in conduit. Performs line maintenance and repairs for subscriber-based electronics and cable infrastructure that delivers products and services to customers. Performs traffic control flagging duties for roads and highways as needed. Ensures company assets are properly and continuously maintained in excellent operating condition while secured in a safe manner Qualifications High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Minimum of 3 years of experience in aerial and underground construction in the cable or telephone industry. Loads and transports heavy equipment to and from assigned jobsites. Reads and interprets maps/prints/drawings while determining the appropriate materials, equipment, and tools necessary to complete the assigned work. Surveys job sites while considering all safety measures to ensure a safe working environment for associates, general public and property. Stays familiar with proper safety equipment and the proper use of the equipment and installation. Follows OSHA, NESC, and Company safety regulations and precautions when completing assigned work. The Construction Technician I assists with installing small cells and fiber optic lines, both underground and aerial. Performs maintenance on existing small cells and fiber optic lines, which can include but may not be limited to the following listed below. Location: San Antonio / Selma, TX FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Senior Construction Manager or Director Essential Job Functions: Assist with operating, analyzing and documenting fiber and small cell network status via OTDR and RF analyzer equipment Read and interpret blueprints/floor plans Maintain good housekeeping practices Measure and mark floors, position and assemble iron work and cable rack Drill floors, install raised floors, install anchors, level, align and secure equipment including earthquake requirements Assist new team members and ensure that all team members are up‐to‐date on knowledge of existing and new technologies Perform the maintenance of existing cables, including evaluation tests and repairing old faulty cables Perform rod and rope installs to confirm fiber path Safely operate a boom truck, climb poles as needed and utilize standard tools of the trade and provide training and supervision for other team members Communicate with Project Manager and Team Leader on workload status to meet designated goals Close a project by completing daily production sheets, verifying proper levels after activation and optimization of equipment and troubleshoot as necessary Use fiber tools and fiber optic test equipment including fusion splicer, power meter and OTDR and train other team members in proper use Read, understand and revise splice documentation and maps as required Analyze system failures and other unusual system occurrences to isolate the source of the problem and determine whether the failure is caused by software, hardware, or other factors Work underground and aerial cables and supervise and train other team members to perform this work Install small cell hardware and equipment for both aerial and underground locations Read a compass and determine azimuths Install and termination of coaxial cables Install required power and grounding Test RF cables with the use and understanding of RF test equipment such as PIM unit, Sweep meter and Light meter Must work in a team environment that requires regular communication with other employees, vendors, and clients Work normal business hours Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm with ability to work outside regular business hours as the installation or maintenance schedule requires Perform all activities in a manner that ensures the safety of yourself, your team, our clients and the public Stenciling and designation of equipment Connect all signal, bus and power cable to include butt, strip, fan, form, wire wrap, and/or crimp Properly run, dress, form, secure and sew all cabling Perform continuity test with Multi Meter or CAT 5 tester Adhere to circuit pack handling and electrostatic discharge procedures Understand and use established safety requirements/procedures for equipment, ESD, power, & radiation Competently and safely use basic hand tools Competently and safely use electric tools (Telecommunication Industry Standards) Understand and interpret OEM and Customer installation requirements including Drawings & QC Standards Install frames, cabinets, and misc. equipment including batteries and BBUs Install cable ladder, radio cabinets & components, transmission equipment Terminate DC power, Ethernet and fiber jumpers Install cables, power, inter‐cabinet, alarm punch‐down, alarm cables bulkhead antenna Connections Prepare doc redline, site clean‐up, site acceptance, doc delivery COP Other duties as assigned Requirements: Must be eligible to work in the US without employer sponsorship Must be able to pass pre‐employment screening that includes background and drug testing. One (1) or more years of experience with fiber optics installation and telecommunications equipment installation, preferred. Basic knowledge of installation of telecommunication services. Must be able to travel to work sites 75‐80% of the time.
