High school diploma or equivalent required from an accredited institution
Completion of at least one year (2 semesters) of college science courses OR one year of experience in a clinical laboratory
ASCP certification desirable
Recent completion of a course in medical terminology or completion within 60 days of hire
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
Ability to read, follow directions, and perform procedures associated with specimen collection, handling and processing
Ability to recognize problems and take corrective action
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, via telephone and via email
Ability to work well under pressure and handle emergency situations
Ability to function as part of a team dedicated to patient care
Good computer skills including Microsoft Office products, and preferably experience with Evident and Lifepoint
Responsibilities
Use appropriate techniques and procedures to obtain blood samples by venipuncture and skin puncture
Instruct patients on proper collection procedures for urine collection, stool collection, and other miscellaneous collections
Correctly prepare and process samples for testing including receiving, verifying, packaging, and sending to other labs via courier
Correctly follow laboratory procedures for identifying the patient and labeling specimens accurately and completely
Register patients by collecting and verifying patient, guarantor, and insurance information. Accurately and completely place orders in the LIS
Order supplies as needed and notify appropriate individual when supplies are low. Distribute supplies to the appropriate areas
Greet patients and family in a friendly manner. Answer phone promptly, professionally
Assist laboratory technologists / technicians with screening / triaging calls and providing accurate and timely lab results to physicians and patients
Respond immediately and appropriately to emergency situations. Able to be flexible and rotate when necessary
