The Western District of the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) that covers the western region of Virginia is seeking two (2) experienced forensic pathologists to join the staff of two (2) current forensic pathologists, making the total four (4) forensic pathologists. This office is one of only eleven in the country with its own CT scanner. The Assistant Chief Medical Examiner's (ACME) responsibilities include death investigations, postmortem exams, approximately 250 medicolegal autopsies per year, consultations with interested parties, court testimony, and supervision of staff, and other administrative oversight duties. The position advises/ supervises local medical examiners as a part of a 77-year-old statewide medical examiner system. Educational responsibilities include the instruction of forensic pathology fellows, medical students, public safety officers and others. The office has a relationship with three medical schools and multiple universities in Virginia. The pathologist will participate in educational, training and research activities and participate on committees. University appointment is anticipated with rank determined by qualifications. Occasional overnight travel may be required. The Virginia OCME does not perform autopsies on Sundays and the office does not currently perform autopsies on Saturday. ACME's must be licensed in Virginia to practice medicine. Forensic Pathologists accreditation of the medical examiner system by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) requires Board Certification in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology within two years of employment. Assists dentist or hygienist, when needed, in medical or dental emergencies. 9. Removes instruments after procedures; and cleans, and prepares them for sterilization. 10. Autoclave - maintains water levels daily, loads instruments, runs sterilization cycle; then removes sterilized instruments and redistributes to proper locations. 11. Keeps operatories stocked w/ appropriate materials and instruments, including ordering supplies as needed to maintain office inventory. 12. Cleans operatories and all equipment used according to OSHA standards after each dental procedure. 13. Cleans suction lines and traps in operatories on a weekly basis. 14. Cleans traps in equipment room every other week. 15. Cleans autoclaves and tests sterilization (using Biostrips) monthly. 16. Pulls trash from operatories and other clinic areas twice weekly. 17. Acts as liaison for patient to convey medical and dental information to and from the dentist or hygienist during treatment-related phone conversations, as well as during clinic visits. 18. Assists with the school dental program in all areas of preparation and implementation. 19. Assists at front desk, when available, to answer phones, schedule appointments, and receive payment for services. 20. Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the Dental Assistant position. Administrative Duties: 1. Performs limited administrative functions involving treatment notes and charting for patient dental records and health histories. 2. Assists in performing front office procedures in the absence of the Front Office Specialist including checking in patients, receiving payments and scheduling appointments. 3. Assists/coordinates with the school program, marketing, collecting data and preparation as determined by Johnson Health Center. Performance Improvement Activities: 1. Attends staff meetings and participates in the Johnson Health Center QI program. Safety/Infection Control Activities: 1. Attends all mandatory OSHA infection control seminars, and follows general OSHA guidelines for infection control, including “Universal Precautions.” 2. Abides by all Johnson Health Center infection control policies, including acute response measures in the setting of a public health concern or disease outbreak. Competencies: 1. Completion of high school diploma or equivalent. 2. Two to five years of previous experience in a dental setting preferred. 3. Ability to work well with a team required. 4. Working knowledge of MS Office products and general computer usage. 5. Excellent organizational skills required. Status: This is an FLSA Non-Exempt position. This is an OSHA high risk position.
