RESPONSIBILITIES
Hospital Corpsmen (HM) assist health care professionals in providing medical care to Navy personnel and their families. General Description
The Phlebotomist performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements and instructs patients regarding test preparation and specimen collection. Collects drug screens in accordance with Department of Transportation requirements for collection of regulated drug screens. Varied hours and locations.
Essential Job Duties
Review lab orders/requisitions for complete information and patient insurance to determine/verify correct lab (in-house or referral).
Instruct patient regarding test preparation and specimen collection
Complete order entry in the Lab Information System (LIS), Harvest, and/or referral facility order entry system or requisition and generate Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) and explain to patient.
Verify patient identification using two identifiers at each step: order entry; specimen collection, labeling and aliquoting or transfer.
Collect and process blood, urine, and other biologic specimens in correct collection tubes/anticoagulant and specimen containers and accurately label.
Answer phone inquiries concerning status of tests, results, and specimen collection and transportation requirements. Direct complex phone inquiries to appropriate personnel. Track/locate missing or inadequate specimens. Follow up on pending reference lab results and review charges and invoices as required.
Other Duties
Maintain work area, files, inventory levels, including drug screen collection kits and chain of custody forms (CCF).
Maintain standing orders and temporary accounts.
Train phlebotomy students
Attend in-service training and education sessions, as assigned
Perform specific work duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent
Phlebotomy training (post-High School program)
Preferred Experience
Phlebotomy certification by a recognized certifying board
6 months or more of phlebotomy experience
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Physical Demands: Standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, push/pull, kneel/crouch/crawl, reach with hands/arms; lift up to 10 lbs frequently and up to 100 pounds or more with assistance infrequently; close and color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus required; repetitive hand motions, grasping and fine dexterity required
Work Environment: work near/with moving mechanical parts, toxic/caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather, i.e. dry ice), and loud noise.
