Major Responsibilities: Proper identification of the patient using two identifies: patient name and date of birth. Perform a variety of routine and complex blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture and capillary puncture (finger and heel sticks) using standardized equipment. Respond to all STAT blood work requests within 30 minutes. Respond to all timed specimen requests within + / - 15 minutes. Confer with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation. Transport specimens to the laboratory while maintaining specimen integrity. Adhere to standard precautions and all infection control policies and procedures. Prepare, process, label and store patient specimens according to departmental procedures using approved techniques and equipment, for subsequent analysis by the clinical laboratory. Respond to the pneumatic tube system and disperse patient specimens to the appropriate lab section in an efficient manner. Coordinate the training of new staff members and phlebotomy students to the Central Processing department. Provide technical guidance to Phlebotomy students and new employees. Assist with the scheduling of staff work assignments, ensure smooth work flow; work assignments are arranged to maximize productivity. Perform all computer functions (i.e. quick registration, patient scheduling and check-in, ordering tests, and receiving specimens) in an accurate, timely and efficient manner. Review uncollected lists on a regular basis; ensuring all specimens have been obtained. Centrifuge, aliquot, and appropriately store all reference laboratory specimens per laboratory policies and procedures. Build transport batches to prepare specimens for courier pickup. Mail and fax laboratory reports to physician offices. Schedule the collections of home draws and other off-site locations. Provide routine specimen pick-up for all physicians in adjoining medical / professional buildings. Accurately and completely enters all tests into the LIS from downtime and outpatient requisitions. f. Documents in the LIS any specimen or test cancellations and contacts the appropriate physician or location. 2. Properly prepares specimens according to specific Reference Laboratory requirements, using all available reference books or calling the specific lab for requirements. a. Centrifuges and separates specimens to be sent out observing any special test requirements. b. Transmits a temperature-specific site batch report to the appropriate reference lab and enters the number and type of the specimen(s) sent. c. Enters the name of the test and order code into the LIS whenever ordering a miscellaneous test send out (MTSO) d. Records daily temperatures of refrigerators and freezers in specimen processing area. a. Records temperatures daily. b. Notifies Supervisor if temperature falls outside of established limits. 11. Consistently adheres to established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal precautions, Chemical hygiene and Safety procedures. When handling blood and /or body fluids, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be utilized in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. a. Wears lab coats, gloves, goggles and protective devices as required when handling specimens. b. Follows safety policies for dress. c. Reports any safety hazards to the appropriate supervisor. d. Cleans and disinfects work area according to established protocol, during and at the end of assigned shift. e. Uses protective barrier equipment as required. f. Knows where to find material safety data sheets (MSDS) for items used to perform job. g. Properly disposes of contaminated and hazardous waste materials. h. Complete reports and documents to maintain quality control and answers telephones, taking and relaying messages. **What you will do:** + Processes laboratory requisitions by accurately reviewing requisitions for completeness, ensuring appropriate signatures have been obtained, and entering patient data, test requested, requesting physician information, and billing information into the computer. + Labels specimens, centrifuges and aliquots when it is required for the specimen. + Call STAT results as necessary and answers telephones and provides routine approved information to physicians, nursing personnel and other staff regarding specimen requirements, test results, and so forth, and relays other calls as necessary. **Position Hours:** + 20 hrs, Day Shift (5 days a week, one weekend a month), **Minimum Qualifications:** + High school diploma or GED + Knowledge of medical terminology, medical necessity, ICD-9 coding, specimen processing preferred.
