Job Description

The Medical Director, Medical Affairs serves as a strategic medical and scientific expert within the organization, responsible for shaping and executing medical affairs strategies that drive therapeutic value and scientific leadership. This role provides medical expertise across key medical affairs activities, including healthcare professional engagement, evidence generation (clinical and real-world), scientific communication, medical education, and support of safe and appropriate product use. The Medical Director partners closely with cross-functional teams - including Commercial, Market Access, Regulatory, Safety, and Clinical Development - to support the product lifecycle, from pre-launch through post-marketing.
Responsibilities:
Provide strategic medical and scientific leadership for the assigned therapeutic area/product(s), supporting the development and execution of Medical Affairs plans.
Serve as the medical lead for cross-functional product teams, ensuring medical strategy alignment with brand objectives and unmet patient needs.
Responsible for Medical affairs to input to the design, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of scientific content of protocols, Investigator Brochures, Clinical Study Reports and regulatory submissions and responses.
Drive medical evidence generation strategies, including real-world evidence (RWE), observational research, investigator-initiated studies (IIS), and medical affairs-sponsored studies aligned to strategic priorities.
Support the dissemination of scientific data through publications, congress presentations, advisory boards, and medical education programs.
Provide medical review and approval of promotional and non-promotional materials, ensuring scientific accuracy, fair balance, and compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
Collaborate with Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Compliance, and Pharmacovigilance teams to ensure adherence to internal processes, policies, and external regulations.
Participation in design and execution of clinical trial safety, product safety and risk management plans.
May assist in the development of scientifically accurate marketing materials, medical education programs, advisories, and symposia. Assists with the scientific review, development, approval, execution, and communication of affiliate/area/global medical affairs sponsored or supported clinical research activities.
Partner with Commercial, Market Access, Clinical Operations, and Safety teams to provide medical insights and support product development, launch readiness, and post-market activities.
Provide medical input into market access and health economics & outcomes research (HEOR) strategies, including value propositions and payer engagement.
May interact with and coordinate appropriate scientific and medical activities with internal stakeholders (i.e., commercial, clinical operations, discovery, statistics, regulatory, etc…) as they relate to on-going medical affairs projects. Serves as the scientific team interface for key regulatory discussions.
Serve as a therapeutic area expert and resource for internal stakeholders; provide training to medical science liaisons (MSLs), commercial teams, and cross-functional partners.
Ensures budgets, timelines, compliance requirements are factored into programs' scientific activities.
Qualifications
Medical Doctorate (M.D.) degree or equivalent (D.O. or non-US equivalent of M.D). Relevant therapeutic specialty in an academic or hospital environment preferred. Completion of residency and/or fellowship is preferred.
In depth understanding of the Lung Cancer landscape is a strong preference.
Minimum of 2 years of medical affairs experience in the pharmaceutical industry or academia or equivalent. 5+ years of experience is preferred.
Ability to translate complex scientific information into clear, concise, and impactful medical and strategic guidance is preferred.
Knowledge of clinical trial methodology, data analysis and interpretation, regulatory requirements governing clinical trials and experience in development strategy and the design of protocols.
Proven leadership skills in a cross-functional global team environment.
Ability to interact externally and internally to support global business strategy.
Must possess excellent oral and written English communication skills.

The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) and CARE (Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment) are facilities dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.
Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high-quality care for the animals we serve.
The Director of Veterinary Services, ARC will perform all the duties of a licensed veterinarian, including providing compassionate, high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk animals. In addition, the Director will provide a management presence on the floor to ensure efficient and effective animal flow. The Director will hold the entire team accountable to act with urgency, providing balanced, high-quality care to the animals, coordinating with departments, and practicing Fear Free values.
This position directly manages 1-2 Licensed Veterinary Technicians.
This position affords a wonderful opportunity for a veterinarian to drive forward the care and rehabilitation of animals who are victims of cruelty and neglect. ARC is comprised of medical, behavior, and direct care teams working together to recover, enrich, treat, and support a wide range of cases.
*The schedule for this role is Sunday-Wednesday, 9am-7pm (flexibility on Sunday with possibility of 8am-6pm).
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Managing Medical Cases (60%):
Ensure ARC provides high quality individualized care, considering the medical and behavioral needs of our patients while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
Serve on a panel with medical, behavior, and sheltering leaders to review cases and make weekly pathway planning decisions, including humane euthanasia decisions, taking into consideration animals' physical and psychological well-being, using organizationally aligned tools developed to assess quality of life and readiness for adoption.
Perform humane euthanasia for animals deemed unsuitable for placement, working closely with the behavior and medical teams to ensure a compassionate, low-stress procedure.
Perform medical intakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to ARC and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals, AAH, ARC, and Adoption Center as needed.
Provide medical support for large scale NYPD and CE cases.
Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling. Ensure all staff are practicing Fear Free handing.
Develop skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH medical parameters and guidelines.
Provide medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center and placement partners.
Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care, and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitals.
Respond to after-hours medical concerns.
Oversee and maintain the ARC animal census.
People Management/Managing Patient Flow (20%):
Oversee the daily medical care and case flow of the animals housed in ARC.
Lead the Daily ARC rounds meeting.
Lead ARC LVT meetings as needed.
Develop, disseminate, and keep current the ARC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure their implementation. Facility-specific SOPs are developed in conjunction with CARE, AAH, Adoption Center, BST, and SMS to ensure best medical, sheltering, and behavioral practices.
Model a standard of continued commitment to improve and expand upon all aspects of ARC including, medical, behavior, housing, safety, and animal flow.
Set expectations and goals and provide consistent, high-quality feedback to direct reports, including regular 1:1s and quarterly feedback sessions to build strong relationships, provide clear direction, and encourage opportunities for development. Complete annual performance evaluations.
Practice and espouse positive, people-centric management approaches that are in line with team and organizational core values.
Recommend internal and external training opportunities as needed for direct reports in identified areas.
Respond to concerns from direct reports and selected administrative staff, addressing them promptly and accordingly.
Handle employee-relations issues with confidentiality and care, ensuring compliance with any applicable collective-bargaining agreements.
Conduct corrective actions related to performance.
Maintain proactive communication with the Senior Director as to any critical situations or issues.
Support the Senior Director of Veterinary Services in handling any adverse client or patient events appropriately and professionally.
Model a standard of continual commitment to improvement in all aspects of ARC animal care and handling of dogs and cats.
Serve as a champion in times of change management and proactively partner with the ARC and CARE Leadership team in identifying ways to improve people policies and medical protocols.
Collaborate with the AAH Office Manager and Senior Director of Veterinary Services to ensure ARC has appropriate DVM coverage 7 days per week.
In collaboration with the AAH management team, ensure the ARC veterinary team is scheduled for all required training, meetings, and lectures.
Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%)
Collaborate and support the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Community Engagement, and the Adoption Center departments.
Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.
Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings.
Provide medical information and represent ARC to the public and to media when requested.
Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
Create, model, and follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA and ARC Standard Operating Procedures.
Assist with special projects, presentations and data collection as requested.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:
Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment that combines individual patient and shelter medicine and effectively multi-task with a high degree of integrity and accountability and without loss of attention to detail.
Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively and courteously with all levels of staff.
Maintain an open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols.
Deployment opportunity with BST, Community Engagement, Community Medicine, National Field Response or Rehabilitation Services one time per year (locally and nationally).

Able to work standing for 8 or more hours and bend, crouch, kneel and move freely to perform responsibilities that include handling potentially dangerous animals in stressful conditions.

**Requirements:**
+ Medical Doctor (MD), PhD or PharmD candidates with demonstrated experience in CNS Psychiatry or Neurology (preferably neuroinflammatory) conditions.
+ Must have US Medical Affairs experience in addition to Global Medical Affairs experience (preferred) and knowledge of applicable US regulations.
+ Relevant experience in translational medicine (T0 - T1) or early development (phase 1) assets either within Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, or Clinical Development is preferred.
+ Minimum of 7+ years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry or biotechnology setting. Product launch experience preferred, especially in US.
+ Clinical or academic practice in CNS preferred.

+ Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including KOLs.

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical, Health & Wellness Officer, the Medical Director works closely with Operations and Nursing to support the clinicians and clinical teams and site leadership/management team (i.e., Nurse Manager, Practice Manager) in overseeing the day-to-day administration and delivery of patient care at all Optimus sites for a designated discipline. Together with the Directors of Nursing and Operations, the Medical Director will provide guidance to the clinicians and clinical staff at one or more assigned locations. In this capacity, and in partnership with the Practice Manager and Nurse Manager at that location, the Medical Director will set the tone for clinical practice and operations, modeling the delivery of team-based integrated care both clinically and administratively to ensure the smooth delivery of care to meet clinical, quality, financial and operational goals.
The Medical Director will support the Chief Quality & Transformation Officer in ensuring quality and comprehensive medical care delivery and development for health care plan and programs across Optimus including Peer Review activities and assist with patient billing when appropriate.
Position Highlights:
1. Clinician Staffing/Coverage: In collaboration with Director of Nursing, Nurse Manager and Practice Manager, ensuring adequate clinician staffing at all clinical sites; this may include moving staff where needed and/or providing additional direct patient care.
2. Monitors clinician clinical performance: in collaboration with Quality Department, ensures completion of Peer Review activities for clinicians providing care in the discipline(s) under their supervision.
3. Monitoring Clinician productivity and scheduling works with Practice Managers to review clinician schedules, establish and confirm productivity targets, identify barriers to success, and provide support as needed to facilitate adherence to these targets
4. Under the direction of the CMO, works with Nurse Managers, Practice Managers, and clinical staff to advance the model of Team-based Care in designated units and throughout the organization, and to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care in their respective clinical departments.
5. Champions organizational initiatives and demonstrates the ability to pivot easily and effectively between clinical and administrative priorities, giving appropriate weight and attention to each.
6. Serves as collaborating physician for clinicians in his/her/their department. Supervises clinician onboarding in department; provides 3-month performance appraisal and annual performance appraisals thereafter. Supervises, advises, and trains clinical professionals and/or students.
EDUCATION:
Must hold MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school and internal medicine residency program and licensing as a physician;
EXPERIENCE : Three to five years of clinical management experience required in a community healthcare setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant area(s) of medical specialty and clinical operations.
Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of patients in a diverse community.
Ability to work well under pressure analyzes and evaluates individual member's needs, reach sound conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Bilingual English, Spanish desirable but not required.
