Utilizes quality control procedures according to established procedures and takes appropriate action for Out of Control results. Documents QC appropriately. Operates and maintains equipment. Performs routine safety checks and preventive maintenance on instruments according to procedures and manufacturers recommendations on a consistent, timely basis to insure optimal operation and minimal downtime. Recognizes when any component of the testing system is not performing optimally and performs troubleshooting procedures as warranted on equipment, reagents and procedures in an efficient manner that maintains testing schedules. Refers problems beyond his/her scope of practice to Manager, Assistant Manager, Assistant Supervisor or Medical Laboratory Scientist II.
Pre-analytic: Receives electronic and manual orders for tests to be performed. Receives and/or obtains specimens, assisting with collections, and processing when the workload warrants. Assumes responsibility for assuring collection of adequate and acceptable samples for analysis.
Post-analytic: Responsible for timely release of patient results. Communicates with reference lab to confirm results, specimen disposition and to order supplies. Exercises independent judgment in determining whether test results are released, repeated, or referred for review. Consults with Manager, Assistant Manager, Assistant Supervisor or Medical Laboratory Scientist II when necessary.
Administrative: Assists with workload recording and inventory control. Responsible for monitoring and resolving pending lists per policy. Responds appropriately to provider and clinical staff inquiries. Supports clinical point of care testing by facilitating issue resolution. Participates in department/facility meetings, conference calls, continuing education/in-services. Participates in orientation and training of new employees. Makes recommendations for improvements to the Manager, Assistant Manager, or Assistant Supervisor. Assumes responsibility for day-to-day operations of laboratory, including directing and supporting the collections, and accessioning/processing areas, in absence of Manager, Assistant Manager, Assistant Supervisor or Medical Laboratory Scientist II. THE ROLE: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
A Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing a full range of laboratory testing and reporting laboratory findings to physicians. The skills requirements for a Medical Technician I include: Occupational Specific, Technical Skills, Personal and Professional. AHA's MLT must meet the personnel responsibilities per CLIA Sec. 493.1495: Standard Testing personnel responsibilities.
As AHA's MLT, you will be expected to follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Can identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Apply the principles, theory and techniques of the practice of laboratory medicine to produce and report appropriate. Perform, interpret and record Quality Control data in all departments as appropriate. Records corrective actions where appropriate. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on instrumentation as prescribed in procedures. Record corrective action where appropriate. Must participate in continuing education.

Job Summary
At Southeast Medical Group, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine laboratory analysis independently, including specimen collection and processing. This role supports daily quality control checks, maintains equipment, accurate documentation, and ensures adherence to safety protocols while upholding patient confidentiality and delivering quality customer service. The Medical Laboratory Technician will supervise the Laboratory Assistants on all shifts and ensure that all AABB and CLSI guidelines for specimen handling and safety are followed. The MLT will contribute to efficient lab workflows, inventory management, and a safe working environment.
At Southeast Medical Group, we prioritize employee and patient safety in accordance with OSHA standards.
Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030): Complete annual training on exposure control plans, including the prevention of needlestick injuries and handling of potentially infectious materials. Use universal precautions at all times, such as treating all blood and body fluids as potentially infectious. Report any exposure incidents immediately for post-exposure evaluation and follow-up.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection, as provided by the employer. OSHA requires that PPE be readily accessible, properly fitted, and maintained at no cost to the employee. Training on PPE use and limitations will be provided.
Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200): Be familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in the lab (e.g., disinfectants) and follow safe handling practices to minimize exposure to hazardous substances.
Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act: Utilize safety-engineered sharps devices (e.g., retractable needles) to reduce the risk of sharps injuries. Participate in evaluations of safer medical devices.
