**Job Summary:**
The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is responsible for performing the routine test on blood, tissues, and other body specimens, as well as providing physicians with quality results using a variety of clinical laboratory equipment. The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) must have a total understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques necessary to guarantee complete patient safety and anonymity.
**Essential Functions:**
+ Performs analytical tests on biological specimens, in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures
+ Determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections or by recognizing abnormal/ unusual results
+ Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results by taking the appropriate action according to protocols
+ Performs quality control for all testing and meets established ranges before patient results are released
+ Maintains a safe and efficient work environment by performing equipment checks, cleaning work area, monitoring temperatures following hospital policies, and troubleshoots laboratory equipment
+ Other duties as assigned
**Education:**
+ Bachelor of Science in one of the following: Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Biology or Biochemistry through a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved program (required)
**Certifications:**
+ MLS Medical Lab Scientist Certification or eligible by a nationally recognized certification agency (preferably ASCP) (required)
**Experience:**
+ Externship program completed (preferred)

Perform moderate and high complexity testing, as defined by CLIA, while following the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of test results

Job Duties:
Understands all principle(s) involved in assigned procedures and applies this knowledge to the clinical situation or outcomes in clinical diagnosis management of the patient. (See department competency sheet.) Must be able to determine if specimen integrity issues, patient medication(s), other interfering substances that could affect patient testing results.
Operates, troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment, supplies; and performs procedures to ensure high quality, accurate and cost effective results in all areas of the laboratory.
Ensures accuracy of testing per manufacturer's guidelines and all applicable regulation. Interfaces with Hot Lines and service personnel to oversee proper functionality and repair of instruments.
Reports results within time limits established for procedures, reports results for STAT, critical values and other categories as defined by Laboratory policy.
Records patient data and other information quickly and accurately in the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) to ensure appropriate turnaround time and effective retrieval of patient testing results.
Collects and/or processes specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures for timely and accurate testing.
Performs and documents quality control as specified for each procedure meeting established internal and regulatory guidelines, accurately analyzes quality control results obtained before accepting and reporting patient testing results. Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or GED required
Minimum of 1 year of data entry experience required
Preference for candidates with familiarity with drug names and HIPAA-protected information
Preference for candidates with experience working with bodily fluids, such as urine, oral fluid, and blood
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Skill with completing assignments accurately, and with attention to detail
Skill in data entry with minimal errors
Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
Ability to function in a team environment and promote collaboration
Must be able to work under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, techniques, and well-defined policies
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work will be performed in a laboratory environment and exposes the incumbent to normal laboratory hazards and chemicals, including biohazard materials
Work in varying degrees of temperature (heated or air conditioned)
Accessioning of specimens requires sitting/standing for up to 4 hours continuously
Position requires sitting, walking, standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Essential Duties:
* Prepare and deliver lectures, facilitate classroom discussions.
* Determine materials needed, prepare specimens and facilitate student laboratories.
* Evaluate student performance and assign grades according to program standards.
* Challenge, engage and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree from a NAACLS accredited MLT program
* Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP)
* Minimum of four (4) years of recent work experience in a clinical Core Laboratory
* Documented experience with active teaching and learning strategies in a community college, professional training or other higher education environment.
