Lead Medical Technologist

Assigned responsibilities:
Reviews and evaluates daily and periodic Quality Control testing and procedures.
Ensures performance of periodic instrument maintenance and departmental quality control procedures. Coordinates CAP survey performance and reporting.
Assists with creation of validation plans as may be required for equipment or procedures, and ensures completion of validation package for final review.
Performs Meditech validation exercises as may be required with system upgrades or site specific changes. Ensures department is prepared for planned Meditech downtime.
Monitors transfusion activity at contracted transfusion service client sites for regulatory compliance; may be required to make periodic site visits.
Acts as liaison with Nursing Education to evaluate and/or update mandatory training material. May be asked to assist with creating lessons. Assists with ensuring Blood Bank policies are appropriately posted to SEMC MCN Policy Manager.
Ensures blood product inventory levels are adequate for transfusion support and works to reduce product wastage.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree in medical technology or related science and 3-5 years' full time experience as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to perform repetitive tasks and stand for most of the shift
Comfortable lifting up to 20 lbs
Basic technical skills: pipetting, weighing samples, handling media and equipment

Nice to Have:

Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training, or experience, and technical abilities.

The Elliot Hospital Laboratory is a full service 24/7 operation. We are both CAP and AABB accredited. In addition to traditional inpatient and outpatient work, the laboratory supports a Level II trauma center, Level III NICU, High Risk Maternity unit, three urgent cares, two cancer centers, a community health center and approximately 60 nursing and assisted living facilities. The Medical Lab Scientist/Medical Technologist work as part of the healthcare team to provide our patients with the best possible care. Staff work together with each other, patient providers and our Pathologists to help determine clinical outcomes for our patients. Our technical departments are state of the art with up to date instrumentation including, molecular microbiology, Rotem coagulation technology, a full chemistry line with refrigeration and up to date, histology and cytology departments.
What You'll Do
1. Accurately and precisely perform laboratory tests and maintain the integrity of samples throughout the process.
2. Notify appropriate clinical personnel in the event of critical or life threatening results.
3. Maintain records and documentation in order to adhere to regulations set forth by regulatory agencies such as JACHO, CAP, Medicare, Medicaid and Elliot Hospital Laboratory policies and procedures.
4. Resolve and document procedural problems encountered in the daily workload.
What You'll Need
Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Science or related field OR an equivalent combination of experience and education required. Individuals have up to two years from date of hire to complete degree requirement.

Responsibilities
Perform cytologic analyses
Review and assure correct specimen identification and fixation.
Operate cytology processing and screening instrumentation according to established protocols.
Microscopically evaluate and diagnose cytologic material and correlate cytologic findings with pertinent clinical and statistical data.
Review cases as requested by the Pathologist or when significant discrepancies in interpretation exist.
Provide technical advice and coverage to the preparation and processing area during times of short staffing in that area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
After specialized training and required experience, performs moderate and high complexity tests and interprets them.
Acts as a resource and interprets tests for laboratory users in a manner consistent with level of training and knowledge.
Reviews testing and/or procedures performed by other staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies as required when deemed qualified to do so by the section supervisor.

EXPERIENCE:

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Requires the knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform highly complex tests as defined by CLIA (see appendix A) and accurately report results.
Requires the analytic abilities to perform highly complex testing as defined under CLIA 88 as listed in the appendix A to interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, review highly complex testing performed by other employees as defined by CLIA guidelines and so forth.
