Position Summary:
Utilizing a variety of procedures involving highly complex analytical lab test methodology and techniques, perform quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory analysis on biological specimens such as blood, tissue, and body fluids. These procedures will utilize a variety of procedures, many involving numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. Provide technical expertise and information uses to diagnose, prevent or treat disease.
Position Responsibilities
Provide technical direction and oversight on all levels of testing complexity and analysis on biological specimens such as blood, tissue/organs and body fluids.
Conduct comprehensive evaluation of laboratory test results.
Provide information to health care provider regarding test methodology and interpretation.
Perform phlebotomy as well as performs waived and moderate complexity testing.
Participates and administers proficiency testing programs for all levels of complexity.
Performs seminal fluid analysis
a. Orients patients to proper collection procedure.
b. Performs reliable analysis of sperm concentrations, motility, velocity, viscosity, and agglutination.
c. Checks post-ejaculate urine for possible retrograde ejaculation.
d. Alerts medical staff regarding atypical results, which may require additional testing, and evaluation.
Prepares male partner's semen for intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization
a. Completes work-up prior to motile sperm isolation.
b. Ensures proper procedures are used to isolate motile sperm for insemination.
Provide technical assistance and training to staff on interpretation of quality assurance issues.
Prepares donor semen for intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization.
Perform statistical analysis of quality control data associated with assigned laboratory testing and initiate corrective action based on statistical results.
Report and document variances according to regulatory agency guidelines.
Responsible for the operation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation. Participate in evaluation of equipment and recommend product for acquisition.
a. Maintains quality control standards.
b. Cleans microscopes weekly.
c. Participates in sperm count and sperm morphology quality control activities.
d. Calibrates pipetman annually.
e. Performs daily QC.
Evaluate reagent comparisons, results and recommend changes to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Assure compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements of the laboratory section (JCAHO, CAP, FDA, AABB).
Write and revise laboratory procedures according to NCLLS guidelines.
Train and instruct new staff members and other health care professional (residents, medical students, etc.) on test techniques, development and test interpretation.
Provide performance management feedback and may provide input into performance evaluations.
Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

Education Requires
Baccalaureate degree in biological sciences, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, a related scientific discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Requirements
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
A minimum of one-year experience performing clinical laboratory procedures.
A minimum of one year in a clinical laboratory position (not including program training)
Significant degree of eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Driver's License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards
Availability to provide support to other clinical locations based on clinical need/hours
Desired Qualifications
Experience with performance of activities that fulfill Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) laboratory quality assurance standards.
The ability to set priorities and to optimize use of time to meet caseload and turnaround times.
The ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Summary of Duties of the Medication Technician
The primary responsibilities of the Medication Technician are as follows: 1) Administer or assist with the administration and/or supervision of medications to the residents in a safe, accurate, and timely manner (dependent on State regulations); 2) Provide physical and psychosocial care to all residents in a manner that promotes dignity, choice, and individuality; and 3) Responsible for overseeing the wellness staffing schedule. The Medication Technician reports to the supervisor on duty as well as the Wellness Director.
Essential Functions of the Medication Technician
Administers or assists with or supervises the administration of medications according to the physician order on the medication administration record (MAR).
Documents medications administered on the MAR in accordance with company policy; Checks MARs immediately after administration and prior to end of shift to ensure documentation is complete and accurate.
Conducts change of shift report with oncoming/outgoing shift personnel.
Maintains security of medication cart and narcotic keys during entire shift; Conducts narcotic count at the beginning and end of every shift in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Provides assistance with activities of daily living such as with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene (includes shaving, oral care, nail care, hair care, foot care), toileting, eating, and ambulation/mobility.
Works collaboratively with peers and other team members.
Maintains professional demeanor at all times when interacting with residents and families.
Reports any suspected or witnessed instances of verbal, mental, or physical abuse to licensed staff immediately.
Utilizes safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
Observes and reports changes in residents' physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to Wellness Director or charge nurse, as needed.
Assists residents with swallowing difficulty with eating.
Responds to emergencies in a prompt and calm manner; Immediately reports such emergencies to the charge nurse and/or Wellness Director.
Understands and uses Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Standard Precautions, OSHA's Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens standard, and follows established infection control procedures, hazardous communication, and other safety rules.
Ensures cleanliness of residents' rooms and promptly reports all violations of safety and sanitation rules to supervisor.
Documents provision of services on company forms.
Operates designated medical equipment, copy, scan, fax machines, and telephone.
Responsible for planning the wellness schedule preferably 1 month in advance but no less than 2 weeks.
Participates in an on-call rotation for staffing needs; Will be responsible for finding coverage for open shifts.
Must be available by phone 24/7 while on-call for staffing needs and able to fill open shift if needed.
Non-Essential Functions of the Medication Technician
Provides all necessary care and services to assigned residents and assists other wellness associates as needed.
Participates in and supports the resident-centered activities program.
Cares for sensory enhancement devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids.
Completes housekeeping tasks such as bed-making, linen changes, vacuuming, emptying trash, and cleaning bathrooms.

Escorts residents and coordinates internal transportation needs.
Assists residents with personal correspondence/telephone use when requested.

These individual's primary function will be to perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and some clerical functions. Attention to detail required. Must have excellent work ethic and customer service skills and must be able to work well in a fast-paced environment. Ability to multitask is key to being successful in this role. Shift will rotate weekly between the hours 6:30 AM and 5:00PM.
The successful candidate must maintain patient confidentiality and demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times. The qualified individual will be patient focused, possess excellent communication skills, and must work well with team members.
Must also have a high level of comfort and become proficient in utilizing computer systems including electronic medical record system. Prefer an individual with 2-3 years similar experience with an emphasis on performing phlebotomies preferred.

Responsibilities
Phlebotomy
* Performs venous, arterial and capillary blood collection, processing and delivery of specimens to departments within Trinity Laboratory. Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient, sample and identification and labeling.
* Educates others and maintains knowledge of departmental functions, policies and procedures including AIDET and Focus value.
* Assists with the training new employees, being helpful supportive in the teaching of new associates.
Quality Assurance
* Complies with procedures and services, including QA guidelines, in consultation with the assigned laboratory supervisor.

* Perform laboratory processes including quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical specimens.
o Perform clinical testing on all laboratory equipment.
o Perform cell counts on blood and body fluid specimens.

o Assist with the issue and return of blood and tissues for daily surgical cases.

Experience Requirements
* A Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
* 1 - 3 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
* 1 - 3 years of experience with high complexity testing is required for any position that will oversee a unit which performs high complexity testing.
* Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
* Must be proficient in computer software applications.
* Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.
Desired Qualifications
* Experience in a laboratory overseeing or performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology is highly desired.
* Ability to interpret results of immunohematology testing and determine appropriate blood components for transfusion is highly desired.
* Experience in a Tissue Bank is desired.
