Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
1) Performs routine and special clinical laboratory tests in assigned sections of the clinical laboratory, utilizing automated and non-automated equipment.
2) Accepts responsibility as Acting Charge Clinical Scientist when requested.
3) Assesses results with respect to controls, reviews results for accuracy, and communicates results of test performed to physicians and other authorized personnel.
4) Communicates problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature both within the department and interdepartmentally.
5) Analyzes and evaluates laboratory test results to determine inconsistent results and takes appropriate action.
6) Maintains accurate records of tests conducted, results, data and patients tested including calculation of results from supplied data, obtained data and statistics for quality assurance. Assists with accreditation readiness activities.
7) Maintains equipment in operational condition through making minor adjustments, performing scheduled maintenance, and troubleshooting major problems utilizing departmental resources and manufacturer's telephone trouble lines.
8) Provides instruction in basic theory, laboratory technique, instrumentation, and application of laboratory test procedures to medical residents, new scientists or technicians and students.
9) Performs related duties such as obtaining blood specimens, processing specimens, and clerical activities. Assists supervisors in development of technical procedures and protocols.
10) Maintains clean and efficient work area and replenishes supplies as necessary.
11) Prioritizes workload to maximize efficiency while meeting patient and physician needs.
12) Coordinates Point of Care Testing and/or physician office oversight as needed.
13) Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.

General Summary:

Unit Position Summary

Work hours vary including evenings, weekends and holidays. Duties associated with this position involve exposure to veterinary biological specimens, working with hazardous waste, use of regulated chemicals and biological materials, and working on a video display terminal greater than 25 percent of the time. Reporting to and working closely with the Clinical Pathology section manager, the Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for: 40% - Performs lab tests on specimens using automated and manual methods. 40% - Evaluates laboratory results for discrepancies in order to ensure proper reporting. Enters pertinent information into the computer in order to generate results. 10% - Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of complex lab equipment and calibrates instruments in order to ensure reliable results. Maintains QA/QC records, identifies variances, resolves QA/QC issues. Troubleshoots as necessary. 5% - Participates in problem-solving, laboratory policy making, and information distribution. Participates in VDL activities, staff meetings, SOP's drafting, and process improvement efforts. 5% - Consults with veterinarians and other clients in order to provide information and lab results. General Purpose of Job: Performs established laboratory procedures, maintains and operates instrumentation and evaluates, interprets and reports test results while meeting quality assurance parameters. Provides information and related services as needed in assigned areas of the laboratory department.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
1) Performs routine and special clinical laboratory tests in assigned sections of the clinical laboratory, utilizing automated and non-automated equipment.
2) Accepts responsibility as Acting Charge Clinical Scientist when requested.
3) Assesses results with respect to controls, reviews results for accuracy, and communicates results of test performed to physicians and other authorized personnel.
4) Communicates problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature both within the department and interdepartmentally.
5) Analyzes and evaluates laboratory test results to determine inconsistent results and takes appropriate action.
6) Maintains accurate records of tests conducted, results, data and patients tested including calculation of results from supplied data, obtained data and statistics for quality assurance. Assists with accreditation readiness activities.
7) Maintains equipment in operational condition through making minor adjustments, performing scheduled maintenance, and troubleshooting major problems utilizing departmental resources and manufacturer's telephone trouble lines.
8) Provides instruction in basic theory, laboratory technique, instrumentation, and application of laboratory test procedures to medical residents, new scientists or technicians and students.
9) Performs related duties such as obtaining blood specimens, processing specimens, and clerical activities. Assists supervisors in development of technical procedures and protocols.
10) Maintains clean and efficient work area and replenishes supplies as necessary.
11) Prioritizes workload to maximize efficiency while meeting patient and physician needs.
12) Coordinates Point of Care Testing and/or physician office oversight as needed.
13) Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
14) Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Procedures.

Pay range: $26.32 + per hour; employee may be eligible to receive shift differential of 10% for some or all hours worked on second shift and 15% for some or all hours worked on third shift. Additional details on shift differential will be provided if an offer is extended.

Required Work Experience:

Perform and report on assigned analytical tests in accordance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) ensuring that applicable quality control requirements are met.
Actively support and comply with laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time of results including STATS or critical results to clients.
Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates and if applicable opened dates.
Perform and document QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function. Make quality control decisions regarding the disposition of an assay or test.
Responsible for informing supervisory personnel of all problems associated with the proper performance of test procedures.
Report any actual or potential deviation from standard or accepted testing procedures and cooperate fully with any investigation of same.
Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized report to be generated for physician review and interpretation.
Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.
Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
May assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
Adheres to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements.
Required to use (a) personal protective equipment, (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management.
Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable.
Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.
May be required, in the absence of a Supervisor, to assume lead responsibilities if qualified and delegated.
