LOCATION: 10 Risho Avenue East Providence, RI
HOURS: 3:00pm - 11:30pm; Monday to Friday with rotating Saturdays

In this role, you will:
Perform a vital part of the patient care process through moderate and high complexity testing
Analyze, review, and report testing results

All you need is:
Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent
Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology; or Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science with 1 year of Medical Technology training
1 year of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing
Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, and audible alarms
Entry-level role; professional experience is not required. Internships, academic projects, or equivalent experience are welcome

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree in medical technology or related science and 3-5 years' full time experience as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II is responsible for supervision of assigned workstations including Quality Control (QC) review, training, competency assessment of staff, and inventory management. The testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

About the Elliot Hospital Laboratory:
The Elliot Hospital Laboratory is a full service 24/7 operation. We are both CAP and AABB accredited. In addition to traditional inpatient and outpatient work, the laboratory supports a Level II trauma center, Level III NICU, High Risk Maternity unit, three urgent cares, two cancer centers, a community health center and approximately 60 nursing and assisted living facilities. Our yearly billable volume is approximately 1.6 million tests.
In addition, our Blood bank is an American Red Cross Blood depot for the State of New Hampshire, supporting other hospital with urgent blood product needs.
About the Job
The Medical Lab Scientist/Medical Technologist work as part of the healthcare team to provide our patients with the best possible care. Staff work together with each other, patient providers and our Pathologists to help determine clinical outcomes for our patients. Our technical departments are state of the art with up to date instrumentation including, molecular microbiology, Rotem coagulation technology, a full chemistry line with refrigeration and up to date, histology and cytology departments.
What You'll Do
1. Accurately and precisely perform laboratory tests and maintain the integrity of samples throughout the process.
2. Notify appropriate clinical personnel in the event of critical or life threatening results.
3. Maintain records and documentation in order to adhere to regulations set forth by regulatory agencies such as JACHO, CAP, Medicare, Medicaid and Elliot Hospital Laboratory policies and procedures.
4. Resolve and document procedural problems encountered in the daily workload.
What You'll Need
Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Science or related field OR an equivalent combination of experience and education required. Individuals have up to two years from date of hire to complete degree requirement.
Experience: One year experience as a Medical Technologist preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Certification as an MT or MLS preferred. Exam Eligible required.

Job Summary Overview
In a highly regulated environment (FDA, AABB, TJC, DPH, CMS, NRC), the Blood Bank Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring patients receive the necessary blood products. This position involves performing testing, processing blood products, and maintaining compliance with the department's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The technologist works both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced laboratory setting while also assisting in the training of new employees and students.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Bank Operations
Process specimens, fill orders, issue blood products, and minimize wastage.
Handle phone inquiries and collaborate with other departments.
Recognize and respond appropriately to emergent situations.
Laboratory Testing & Quality Control
Perform critical tests, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, direct antiglobulin tests, and transfusion reaction investigations.
Maintain an efficient workflow, integrating STAT requests with routine testing.
Operate and troubleshoot Blood Bank instrumentation, conduct quality control (QC), and maintain equipment.
Blood Component Processing
Comply with cGMPs for manufacturing and modifying blood components.
Ensure accurate inventory management of blood products, tissue, and supplies.
Reference Lab & Problem Resolution
Perform advanced serological procedures and resolve basic serological discrepancies.
Maintain accurate documentation and ensure timely task completion.
Training & Education
Assist in training new employees, students, and medical staff.

Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform both waived and non-waived testing. Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)
Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.
1. Performs qualitative and quantitative tests and procedures using instruments and/or manual methods according to laboratory policies and procedures.
2. Operates all instruments/analyzers according to laboratory policies and procedures. Performs routine maintenance, function checks or calibrations on equipment according to policies and documents. Recognizes instrument malfunctions, documents problems as may be required, performs troubleshooting and repair according to established guidelines.
3. Performs quality control for all reagents and instruments according to policies and documents results. Takes action for all out of range QC results and documents corrective action steps if applicable.
4. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies. Identifies aberrant patient test results and takes appropriate action; seeks assistance in resolution as needed. Documents all corrective action steps.
5. Participates in QA/QI activities as required. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples. Documents errors using hospital Safety Reporting System; informs supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered.
6. Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily tasks and objectives. Supports and assists coworkers as needed to ensure the best possible patient care; able to work independently while functioning as a team member.
7. Performs other duties as required that may include inventory management, processing samples, call back of critical test results, and clerical duties.
