Qualifications
Education:
College graduate, Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent) required. If hired prior to September 2014, five years experience as a MLS may be considered in lieu of registration.
Experience:
Three to five years experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a minimum two years as a level II Medical Laboratory Scientist with in depth knowledge of the global laboratory operation. Three (3) years of comparable experience demonstrating in depth knowledge of global laboratory operation may be considered in lieu of internal level II experience.

Responsibilities
Performs various laboratory tests, evaluates data, correlate results with pathologic and physiologic states and patient therapy to determine validity and reasonableness of data.
Evaluate and calculates quality control statistics to assess accuracy, reproducibility and validity of laboratory methods.
Performs analytical and decision-making functions without direct supervision, recognizes unexpected results, and take necessary corrective action.
Integrates and relates laboratory data generated by various sections in making judgments regarding possible discrepancies.
Assists in the preparation and presentation of teaching materials for the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology.
Performs preventative and most corrective maintenance and repairs on sophisticated and often computerized laboratory equipment. Calibrates laboratory instruments to assure accuracy.
Demonstrates knowledge and theory behind instrumentation. Diagnoses laboratory instrument malfunctions, and decides when back-up methods must be initiated. Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas and performs all technical procedures.
Evaluates and/or develops new test procedures, monitors them for unexpected problems or sources of error.
Researches, reviews and write technical procedures.
Collects and controls laboratory specimens.
Assures the quality and timeliness of patient results by investigating any problem involving specimen collection, results reporting and turn-around times.
Recognizes unexpected results, errors and problems with patient test. Identifies the technical instrumental or physiologic cause, such as patient variable or interfering substances.
Maintains and communicates department records of tests performed, test results and equipment maintenance.
Assists in the overall operations of the laboratory including utilization of resources and laboratory safety regulations.
Maintains regulatory and safety compliance (i.e. CAP, AABB) in area of responsibility.
Assumes primary responsibility for accurate and timely completion of all testing performed within all areas of responsibility.
Maintains 12 hours of continuing education per year, and cross-training in a minimum of two diverse technical areas.
Must be capable of performing all testing within areas of primary responsibility.
Assumes operational management authority for areas of responsibility in the absence of senior management personnel.
Conserves hospital resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to perform job duties.
Contribute to departmental operations by performing other related duties as may be required and/or assigned.
Contributes to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.
Ensures that professional and personal activities conform to Memorial Medical Center strategic plan and philosophy regarding the Guest Relations Program.

A Medical Laboratory Scientist performs test procedures in a clinical laboratory and conveys the results to the physician or designee in an accurate and timely manner for the purpose of patient diagnosis and treatment
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Technical responsibilities:
* Performs all aspects of pre-analytic workflow appropriate for the specific laboratory section to ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens collected are appropriate for the test ordered and are correctly processed/transported.
* Verifies order where necessary
* Verifies non-patient information (e.g., collection time) according to established protocol.
* Handles unresolved orders, troubleshoots where needed.
* Verifies with physicians and/or nurses prior to laboratory information system (LIS) order entry to resolve unclear, duplicate or otherwise ambiguous orders.
* Verifies specimens for add-on tests are available and acceptable and generates add-on test orders.

* Aliquots specimens according to established protocols.

* Performs preventive maintenance on instruments/equipment in a timely fashion according to defined schedule.
* Verifies reagents and supplies meet defined acceptability criteria upon receipt and prior to use; takes action to ensure unacceptable items are removed from use.
* Ensures that sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for test performance are available. Notifies senior staff when minimum inventory level is encountered.

* Evaluates QC results and takes necessary corrective actions according to established protocol.

* Transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations according to SOPs

* Monitors daily workflow and priorities to assure meeting service levels.

Job Summary:
An employee in this classification is responsible for organizing, supplying, and maintaining lab facilities for both students and instructors. They provide essential support to faculty instructors by preparing the lab facilities before use and assisting during open lab hours. This ensures that the lab environment is well-equipped and ready for educational activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Basic knowledge of assigned discipline.
Two years experience in lab environment; a working knowledge of lab skills and procedures. Basic lab maintenance skills may be necessary.
Ability to perform mathematic and formula computations may be required.
Strong organization skills.
A working knowledge of discipline-specific computer hardware and software.

Essential Duties:
Supervise and assist students during open lab hours.
Maintain lab facilities to ensure a clean and safe working environment.
Assist instructors with demonstrations and departmental research; test new products and processes.
Provide routine preventative equipment maintenance, including cleaning and minor technical adjustments. Clean, calibrate and maintain all equipment. Test and maintain safety equipment in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
Prepare lab facilities for all laboratory classes, e.g., prepare and store stock solutions and/or media, maintain specimens, and provide equipment calibrations as necessary. Restock and organize student bench supplies and set up.
Maintain inventory, organize and re-order supplies.
Other Duties:
May train and delegate jobs to student staff.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned which pertain to the job description.
Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed by the department.

Job Description

Performs specimen processing, and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.

Reviews/Records refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records. Areas of concern are recorded through the Corrective Action Log and reported to maintenance for repair. Findings are reported to supervisor or manager.
Answers the main lab phone and transfers calls appropriately to the lab departments.
Performs daily disinfection of surfaces.
Follows lab procedures carefully. Follows up with all outstanding orders on Order Monitor, and communicates all timed, completed or uncompleted draws/charges, tasks, missing phones through shift reporting to the next shift prior to clocking out and performs other duties as assigned.
Follows JCAHO National Patient Safety goals in regard to two patient identifiers and hand washing.

Role and Responsibilities
Record keeping (QC, Temps, Chemical usage & disposal)
Filing slides and blocks
Label cassettes and slides
Perform block checks and organizing slide books
Dispose of specimen containers
Emptying chemical waste into large bins
Change/rotate chemicals on processor and H&E stainer
Maintain adequate inventory for department needs
Manage the Tasks in the task box
Aide Pathologist or Lab team as needed
Qualifications and Requirements
High School Diploma or GED
Computer literate
Strong Analytical judgement
Accuracy and close attention to details
Interest in medical lab setting
Preferred Skills
Familiarity with automated laboratory equipment and terminology (preferred but not required)
Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (preferred but not required)
