Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests, procedures and related duties. Utilizes scientific principles as well as technical, procedural, and problem solving aptitudes for day-to-day laboratory technical operations, quality control, quality assurance, procedure/instrument maintenance and corrective action, test result correlation, and clinical laboratory related continuing education.
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for expeditious and accurate performance of routine clinical laboratory tests and basic clinical laboratory functions.

Education and/or Experience
For Medical Lab Scientist; Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university and completion of NAACLS accredited Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) program, or a Bachelors degree and one to two years of experience/training acceptable to the NCA or ASCP at the Clinical Laboratory Scientist/MT level.
For Medical Lab Technician; Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school. Six months to one year related experience and/or training preferred.
Certificate, Licenses, Registrations
Certification as a MLS or CLS from a nationally recognized credentialing agency for Laboratory professionals (NCA, ASCP, AMT) or obtain within 6 months of hire.
Essential Functions
For Medical Lab Scientist;
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of laboratory instrumentation or disciplines including but not limited to: supply inventory, quality control, calibration, reagent preparation, etc. Initiates and follows through with corrective action.
Accurately performs basic to complex clinical laboratory tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment in addition to established protocol, techniques and equipment manuals.
Communicate laboratory data and pertinent technical information to appropriate departments and individuals in an accurate and timely fashion. Includes verbal as well as electronic means.
Critique, correlate and differentiate results of tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment in addition to established protocol, techniques and equipment manuals. Assess the validity of results which appear usual, or which may differ significantly from previous results or expected values.
Participate with development of protocols, lab manuals, new instrumentation, lab CQI or other laboratory developmental activities.
Provide technical guidance to and be primary resource for phlebotomy, MLT, and lab assistant staff members.
Provide instruction and/or perform specimen collection.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
For Medical Lab Technician;
Performs basic supply inventory, calibration, reagent preparation, quality control checks and preventative maintenance steps on assigned instrumentation. Initiates, follows-through with and documents basic trouble shooting of equipment as necessary within established guidelines, or requests assistance.
Accurately performs routine tests and specimen collection utilizing established protocol.
Communicates laboratory data and pertinent technical information to appropriate departments and individuals in an accurate and timely fashion. Includes verbal as well as electronic means.
Accurately performs basic to complex clinical laboratory tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment.
Distinguishes results of tests as being normal, abnormal or unusual. Recognizes test inconsistencies and take appropriate corrective action. Calls critical test results to appropriate personnel immediately according to established protocol. Also assesses the validity of results which appear unusual or which may differ significantly from previous results or expected values.

Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) also acceptable. Registry eligible candidates must successfully complete the Board of Registry examination within 12 months of employment. If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice. Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
