DEPARTMENT: LABORATORY FACILITY: Tift Regional Medical Center WORK TYPE: Full Time SHIFT: Daytime The Histotechnician (HT) processes human tissues for histological exam. The Histotechnician accessions, grosses, preps, embeds, cuts, mounts, and stains human tissue to provide data to pathologists on the functioning of tissues and organs, and causes and/or progress of disease. The Histotechnician also assists with autopsy as necessary. RESPONSIBILITIES: Detailed responsibilities: * Follows the correct guidelines for proper identification of patients and patient samples. * Accurately performs histotechnical procedures, embedding, cutting tissue slides for H&E as well as performing special stains and immunohistochemical stains. * Reviews procedure manuals and accurately performs procedures as outlined in the procedure manual. * Adequately assists pathologists with frozen sections, grossing, and autopsies. * Performs and records quality control procedures in the proper log and/or chart as required. * Use proper grossing techniques. * Use proper medical terminology. * Properly uses Co-Path system. * Informs supervising technician of supplies to be ordered. * Informs laboratory director of any supplies on back order when necessary. * Coordinates and routes specimens to the proper area. * Checks all specimen labels and requisitions to confirm the correct identity of specimen using two patient identifiers. * Notifies supervisor of any labeling errors of specimens and records discrepancies in Co-Path. * Maintains all required records, reports, files, logs and statistics. * Maintains confidentiality of laboratory results according to established procedure. * Releases confidential information only in accordance with hospital policy. * Performs daily maintenance procedures as required on equipment and reports any instrument malfunction to the supervisor. * Keeps abreast of pertinent federal, and state regulations and laws and Tift Regional Health System, Inc.
