Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Knowledge of billing/coding for lab procedures • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingerstick to patients. • Collect appropriate laboratory specimens according to the testing ordered. • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures. • Verifies test requisitions by comparing the information with nursing station log, bringing discrepancies to the attention of clinical personnel. • Verifies patient by reading patient identification. • Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with lab personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time. • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed. • Can appropriately document using the LIS system all specimens collected and appropriately order the testing according to the requisition from the ordering physician. • Recognizes system failures, and inconsistent or erroneous patients results, and reports these along with unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, MAS, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; maintaining unresolved orders. • Handles the quality control material appropriately and responds to out of range results in an appropriate manner. • Enhances the phlebotomy department's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments. • Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly • Document corrective actions associated with QC, QA, instrument and proficiency testing. • Knows and uses proper reporting systems (including panic results). Sorts samples for distribution throughout the lab (X-rays, Coggins, Cytology, etc.). Scans tubes into storage racks and enters specimen data into database to verify the accuracy of information. Accessions various specimens including but not limited to urine, whole blood and plasma, feces, and biopsies. Checks all trash containers within the Specimen Processing department when assigned. Assists other lab personnel with specimen storage. Ensure Turn Around Times (TAT's) are met. Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.
