Job Duties/Responsibilities:
The main function of a lab technician is to perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
A typical lab technician may work under the supervision of a medical technologist.
Job Responsibilities: Set up, adjust, maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment. Analyze the results of tests and experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical and electrical devices.
Analyze, gather and record test data to issue reports that use charts, graphs and narratives. Obtain specimens, cultivating, isolating and identifying microorganisms for analysis.
May examine cells stained with dye to locate abnormalities.
Consult with a pathologist to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are found.
May conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases, and enter findings into computer.
May conduct blood tests for transfusion purposes and perform blood counts.
May collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
Skills: Verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and problem solving skills.
Ability to work independently and manage one time.
Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries and diseases.
Ability to analyze data and accurately document and record results.

PURPOSE
Under general supervision and following established laboratory procedures, performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results.
Arranges for pickup or delivery of specimens sent to reference lab or outside lab.
Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and either corrects the problem or refers to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Recognizes alert/critical test results, informs appropriate personnel and documents.
Communicates information such as test results, normal ranges, and specimen requirements to authorized sources.
Demonstrates technical laboratory skills to students and new employees.
Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
Responsible for administering testing according to policies and procedures.
Responsible for applying Total Quality Management (TQM) guidelines to laboratory processes.
Adheres to all company policies, including but not limited to, OSHA, HIPAA, compliance and Code of Conduct.

Responsibilities
The technician performs all patient testing functions, including ABO testing, antibody screens, antibody identification work-ups, antigen typing, and crossmatching. They process apheresis platelet products and Acrodose platelet manufacturing according to manufacturer guidelines and in compliance with FDA and AABB standards. This position manages the timely and accurate receipt of donor testing results from ETF and ensures that all components are properly labeled for distribution. The technician works as part of a collaborative team to support the efficient release of safe blood products and follows all procedures for testing, maintenance, safety, and quality control with a high level of accuracy.
The technician ensures compliance with good manufacturing practices, SOPs, and regulatory requirements, seeking guidance from department leadership whenever questions arise. They complete all required proficiency and competency assignments within designated timelines, maintain a clean and safe work environment, and assist with validation protocols as needed. The role also includes supporting the Laboratory Manager in monitoring reagent usage, maintaining adequate inventory, and learning additional component preparation techniques as required. Requirements
This position requires an Associate of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or an equivalent credential. ASCP or NCA certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Blood Bank Technologist is preferred. The technician must be familiar with, or able to learn, cGMP, AABB, and FDA regulations. Reliability, punctuality, and a strong team-oriented attitude are essential. The role requires participation in a rotating on-call schedule, flexibility, adaptability, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. The technician must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid Texas driver's license, proof of insurance with required levels of coverage, and an acceptable driving record.
Physical and Mental Abilities
The position requires the ability to remain focused and make sound decisions in a busy or noisy environment, the ability to multitask effectively, and the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
