Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation's leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.
The CSUVetCE team operates within the state-of-the-art continuing education (CE) facilities of Colorado State University's Translational Medicine Institute ( CSU - TMI ). CSUVetCE seeks to provide an unparalleled CE experience every day ... something we refer to as "CE Elevated". We believe that people, animals and the planet can be improved when inspired learners, engaged educators and meaningful learning experiences collide; fostering that collision is our daily purpose.
CSUVetCE, though a relatively new team, is now the largest university-based provider of veterinary continuing education in North America. We host approximately 100 courses each year on approximately 200 calendar days including a wide variety of training courses for veterinarians and veterinary technicians on the care of small animal, equine and other species. We also do a small amount of human continuing medical education and that sector may grow in the future. We are a small, but rapidly growing and maturing team; now is a great time to jump aboard CSUVetCE for the right person. We often operate on a 7-day work week in which the workload is divided into daily shifts amongst our team members. Responsibilities for CE lab operations will be divided between CE Lab Course Coordinators, CE Lab Assistants (this position) and student hourly employees and volunteers.
Position Summary
We're seeking a motivated, positive, intelligent, responsible, customer-centric and skilled veterinary technician who is driven to serve the profession, not through clinical service, but through their support of the team's educational mission. This individual will assist with CE lab set-up, active support of the educators during courses, cadaveric specimen preparation, live animal support, inventory/ordering, basic data entry/record keeping, scheduling, instrument cleaning/sterilization, shipping/receiving, and general cleaning/laundry. Other duties may include hospitality support.
The ideal candidate knows how to work independently as well as in a team. They can direct and train a group of student employee/volunteers and enjoys watching them grow under their guidance and leadership. They are communicative within their unit as well as with other units. Their strong interpersonal skills will help this individual to welcome and serve our course participants, instructors, and vendors. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, dependability / responsibility and written / oral communications skills are needed. Detailed laboratory planning and execution are required, but the ability to easily adapt to unforeseen factors is also necessary.
We use a combination of simulators, models, tissue samples, cadavers (mostly animal) and live subjects (mostly animals) in our courses. Though models and simulators are used as alternatives to cadavers where suitable, our hands-on training courses most commonly use animal cadavers. Live animals are used for non-invasive procedures such as examination skills, ultrasound, and endoscopy training. Invasive procedures such as minimally-invasive laparoscopy procedures are only performed when beneficial for the animal. No animals are euthanized as part of our educational program. Skills in live animal patient care are required, but candidates must know that live animal work represents a very small portion of our overall program and the candidate's work activities.
