Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Evaluates specimen adequacy for test performance; obtains specimens for quantitative and qualitative analyses.
* Reviews/verifies test results recognizes and follows through on abnormal/unusual results and communicates same to appropriate personnel. Accurately completes all required documentation.
* Performs routine and specialized testing in assigned area. Correlates laboratory findings with disease stage integrates and relates data from other laboratory specialty areas. Confirms abnormal results and specimen discrepancies and institutes correct follow-up procedures.
* Performs and documents daily quality control and quality assurance measures to assure that tolerance limits are not exceeded. Advises supervisor of quality assurance/quality control problems. Evaluates CAP and other survey proficiency testing materials as required.
* Analyzes technical problems pertaining to collection of specimen laboratory data and instrumentation. Determines cause and rectifies problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures.
* Calibrates instruments. Performs and documents preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and instruments. Recognizes sources of repair and maintains appropriate documentation.
* Participates in continuing education by attending relevant workshops in-services or town meetings to accumulate 6-10 documented CE hours/year.
* Presents 1-2 in services/year.
* Keeps work area in a clean and organized manner at all times in keeping with the lean standards as designed. Decontaminates counter surfaces instruments computers telephones and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
* Participates in the education and training of students and new employees.
* Provides technical advice and support to other laboratory personnel as required.
* Informs next shift of pertinent information to maintain efficient operation.
* Demonstrates simple/complex troubleshooting skills and adheres to QC and maintenance schedule.
* Submits 1-2 occurrence reports that may lead to a process improvement.
* Generates realistic suggestions regarding processing issues and helps with the implementation of the improvement.
* Demonstrates no more than 1 documented Category A or B (major) error.
* Demonstrates no more than 10 documented Category C (minor) errors.
* Participates in the education and training of students and new employees as assigned by supervisory personnel.
* Performs all duties according to the standard work procedure.
* Notifies Supervisory personnel of any issues in a timely manner. Report issues that arise that may impair the performance of the LEAN Workflow Procedure. Suggest ways to resolve.
* Performs workflow audit thorough LEAN Assessments when scheduled to do so. Report completed audit results without delay to supervisory personnel with suggestions for improvement.
* Adhere to the pre-determined lunch/break schedule unless otherwise instructed to ensure adequate coverage of work area so that productivity levels are not compromised.
* Maintains adequate reagents/supplies in the work area and/or on the instruments to avoid delay in sample processing.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
* Bachelor's degree in Chemical Physical Biological Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field required or
* Master's degree in Chemical Physical Biological Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field required or
* Doctoral degree in Chemical Physical Biological Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field required or
* Doctoral degree in Medicine required
* These degree requirements are waived for high school (or equivalent) graduates who have successfully completed an official military training of at least 50 weeks duration and who have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician)
Experience
* 1-2 years of clinical laboratory training and/or experience required
Licenses and Certifications
* ASCP - Medical Technologist certification required or

2026 Laboratory Assistant, Biotechnology for Science & Health Academy

General Information:
The Laboratory Assistant supports the Academic Director (AD) during the 2-week Biotechnology for Science & Health Academy. Successful Laboratory Assistants are flexible, can pivot quickly to accommodate unexpected changes and issues, and are leaders who stay both warm and focused under pressure. This is a laboratory and academic support position.
Responsibilities:
● Completing training and learning about the program to understand how to best support the student experience.
● Meeting with Lab Directors and Lab Faculty prior to programs to review lab activities.
● Maintaining a well-stocked lab environment.
● Creating a safe and supportive academic environment for students.
● Building community and belonging amongst the students and staff.
● Establishing appropriate boundaries with students in compliance with the University's Protection of Minors Policy.
● Reporting unsafe, inappropriate, or concerning behavior, and student conduct issues.
● Enforcing University policies, procedures, and regulations to students.
● Other duties as assigned.
Schedule:
● Training/Lab prep | There will be training and lab prep work in early June.
● Program in Session | June 28 - July 10, 2026.
Terms & Compensation
● Laboratory Assistants are designated for the Summer 2026 term with dates of employment from May 18 through August 8, 2026.
● Laboratory Assistants will work approximately 20-40 hours per week to support the program.
● Compensation will include $21.00 per hour for up to 40 hours of work per week.
● Employment with the University is at-will and may be terminated by Laboratory Assistants or the University at any time without notice or cause. Employment with the University should not be considered as an implied or explicit guarantee of employment or as a personal contract.
● Failure to meet the standards and expectations of the University, the School of Continuing Studies, and the Office of Summer and Special Programs, may result in termination.
Minimum Qualifications:
● Some graduate-level medical or science education.
● Experience working in a lab.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Bachelor's degree.
● Current or graduating Georgetown student.
● Institutional knowledge of Georgetown University.
