Primary Responsibilities:
⢠Specimen Processing: Responsible for meticulous specimen processing including receiving, verifying patient identification, sorting, preparing, and distributing blood, urine, and other biological specimens according to protocol. The Specialist operates laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and copiers and utilizes the organization's EHR and LIS computer systems to perform these functions. Review data in the laboratory information system, label specimens, centrifuge, aliquot, and load specimens onto laboratory equipment
⢠Phone and Customer Service: Field phone calls, provide ordering information on lab tests and specimen requirements, answering telephones, taking, and relaying messages, and offering phone customer service. Includes receiving calls regarding test ordering information and patient results from providers and contacting reference laboratories for test inquiries and resolution. Effective communication ensures that inquiries are addressed promptly and accurately, supporting overall laboratory efficiency
⢠Documentation and Resource Management: Serving as a lab resource, the Specialist handles documentation related to lab incidents, fills out reference lab forms, resolves specimen issues, and reports issues. Ensure results are received from external testing sites, and scan results into EHR ensuring results are sent to providers
⢠Maintenance of Equipment: Maintenance duties include recording temperatures, defrosting freezers, and cleaning laboratory equipment. Ensures that all equipment is functioning correctly and adheres to maintenance schedules, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the lab
⢠Quality Improvement and Compliance: Contributes to Quality Improvement and Lean Process Improvement activities. They complete all mandatory learning requirements on time and attend and participate in department, team, and committee meetings. Compliance with all department and location-specific policies and procedures is mandatory
⢠All staff members are to promote a positive and productive work environment by acting maturely and responsibly, satisfactorily performing job responsibilities, and conducting themselves professionally, courteously, and respectfully toward fellow employees, physicians, and patients

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 0700 - 1630 hours Shifts will normally be scheduled for an 8.5 to 9 hour period, to include an uncompensated 30 to 60 minute lunch break, respectively. In no instance will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of 80 hours per two-week period.
CORE DUTIES
Perform a full range of automated and non-automated laboratory procedures in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology according to established protocols.
Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis. Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained.
Prepare reagents and primary reference materials as necessary. Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Identify the cause of common problems and make simple repairs.
Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction. Locate and implement corrections. Obtain analytical data, convert to a prescribed unit of reporting, as necessary, and correlate data to verify results.
Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products and maintain proper records for quality control and quality assurance reports.
GENERAL DUTIES
Contractor personnel shall perform a full range of duties consistent with their labor category, education, training, experience, clinical privileges (as applicable), and assigned position. General duties that apply to all personnel or across certain labor categories are given below.
Maintain a level of productivity comparable with that of other individuals performing similar services.
Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.
Practice aseptic techniques as necessary. Comply with infection control guidelines to include the proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious wastes, and the use of universal precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
Function with an awareness and application of safety procedures.
Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Experience:
One year of experience as specified in the TO.
Certification: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
Current certification/registration as determined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT as specified in the TO.
BLS CERTIFICATIONS: shall maintain current certification in one of the following: American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Course. Web-based classes do not meet required standards. Location: Iraq
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible to provide comprehensive health services to DOS, DOD, and contractor personnel stationed in Iraq. The MLT performs lab tests and procedures, mostly comprising of microscopic, bacteriological, hematologic, immunologic, and chemical diagnostic analyses on samples of tissue, blood, urine, stool, synovial fluid and semen. The MLT looks for clues to the absence, presence, and extent of the causes and progression of diseases through accurate and efficient lab tests.
Key Responsibilities:
Collect and process biological specimens for laboratory testing.
Conduct routine and specialized tests in hematology, microbiology, chemistry, and blood bank.
Maintain laboratory equipment and troubleshoot any technical issues.
Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean laboratory environment.
Record and report test results accurately and in a timely manner.
Collaborate with pathologists and other medical staff to interpret results and ensure quality patient care.

Who we're looking for: The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Trainee/1 with the Microbiology Team at the University of Washington Medical Center - Montlake.
The MLS Trainee/1 plays a key role in improving the health of our patients by reporting pathogens and susceptibility information to providers by using many of the latest methods for identification and susceptibility testing.
Work schedule:
* 100% FTE
* Monday - Friday with rotating weekends and holidays

What you'll contribute:
* Perform various tests for the identification of bacteria, yeast, mold and parasites on the routine benches per laboratory protocols. Perform susceptibility tests (disk diffusion, E-test, MIC and other methods as required) on pathogens per laboratory protocols.
* Prepare, evaluate, and report direct smears, including but not limited, to Gram stains, KOH preps, Pneumocystis DFA stains, Auramine-O stains, Kinyoun stains and Wright/Giemsa.
* Perform various serological procedures including PCR, EIA and latex agglutinations.
* Rotate and maintain competency in all sections where trained.
* Understand and operate a variety of laboratory equipment (i.e. automated blood culture system, mass spectrometry instrument, automated susceptibility system, Verigene, BioFire, Cepheid Gene Xpert, microscopes, biological safety cabinet and anoxomat) and perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
* Exhibit a working knowledge of the laboratory information system software and teach it to others.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Must qualify as General Supervisor, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations.
Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is preferred.
A minimum of five years of laboratory technical experience with at least two years of experience in immunohematology reference testing is required (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
A minimum of three years of laboratory supervisor or Lead experience is preferred.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrated expertise in immunohematology reference testing.
Basic knowledge of molecular techniques is preferred.

Education & Experience:
Must qualify as General Supervisor, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations.
Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is preferred.
A minimum of five years of laboratory technical experience with at least two years of experience in immunohematology reference testing is required (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
A minimum of three years of laboratory supervisor or Lead experience is preferred.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrated expertise in immunohematology reference testing.
Basic knowledge of molecular techniques is preferred.
Requires the ability to comprehend the criticality of the testing being performed, as it relates to the blood components being prepared for transfusion or organs being transplanted. Includes a fundamental understanding of the financial value of the testing reagents, blood components being prepared, and the necessity to follow all regulatory rules and regulations (AABB, CFR, EU, CLIA, HIPAA, and State), including FDA's "Good Manufacturing Practices".

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This is a highly regulated position and is subject to meeting various regulatory agency and accrediting body rules and regulations (FDA, AABB, CLIA, CAP, etc.).

The position requires extensive computer and close work; occasional heavy lifting, constant standing, overtime; as well as infrequent evening meetings and weekend work.

**_$3,000 - $4,000 recruitment incentive available for eligible new employees joining the UW Medicine team._** **Who we're looking for:** The UW Medicine Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee/1 with the Coagulation & Hematology Division at the University of Washington Medical Center: Montlake.
Our evening shift crew handles a very diverse population, including oncology patients from the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center, transplant patients, patients who need complicated cardiac care, and patients who need mechanical circulatory services. We see interesting results with these patients in both coagulation and in hematology. We also receive samples from multiple community clinics, so we see normal patient samples as well. Additionally, we conduct a lot of body fluid cell count and differentials.
In partnership with the University of Washington, we train MLS students during their clinical rotations as well as residents who will eventually run their own labs. Not only do we enjoy training others, but we also engage in continuing education opportunities to maintain our MLS certifications through MediaLab, MedTraining Services, and DLMP Grand Rounds and Research Rounds.

**What you'll contribute:**
**_Coagulation General Duties_** **_:_**
_On the General Bench_
+ Perform Coagulation testing such as PT, PTT, Thrombin Time, Fibrinogen, D'dimer assays and mixing studies when ordered on the STAR Max.
+ Perform heparin contamination checks and removal protocols in accordance with SOPs.
+ Perform Liquid anti-Xa testing for UF Heparin, LMW Heparin, Rivaroxaban Level, Apixaban Level, Chromogenic factor X, DTI and Dabigatran levels, Factor VIII and Factor IX levels when ordered on the STAR Max.
+ Perform Platelet Function Screen assays on the PFA-100.
+ Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Coagulation General Bench procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material in accordance with SOPs.
+ Perform maintenance procedures daily, weekly and monthly on Coagulation General Bench instruments in accordance with SOPs.
_On the OR Bench - If Trained_
+ Perform Thromboelastograph testing using TEG 6S instruments. Transmit TEG tracings to TEG Manager.
+ Perform Hematological analysis - platelet counts and Hematocrits - using Sysmex instruments.
+ Perform coagulation testing on STAR Max.
+ Run and evaluate Quality Controls on any Satellite Lab instruments still supported as deep back-up to the main lab.
+ Perform maintenance procedures daily, weekly, and monthly on Satellite Lab instruments still supported as deep back-up to the main lab.
_On the Special Coagulation Bench - If Trained_
+ Perform Heparin Induced Platelet Antibody testing, Plasma Hemoglobin testing, and other special or research assays as trained using the BioTek Eon Plate Reader in accordance with SOPs.
+ Perform Platelet Aggregation studies on the ChronoLog and Whole Blood LumiAggregometer.
+ Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Special Coagulation Bench procedures, requiring the running of Quality Control material in accordance with SOPs.
+ Perform maintenance procedures daily, weekly and monthly on special Coagulation bench instruments in accordance with SOPs.
_In General_
+ Process and store Coagulation samples for various Coagulation Assays and various Research Testing projects (may include precipitations, multiple centrifugations, aliquoting plasma into vials and placing them in appropriate freezers or refrigerators).
+ Enter patient and Quality Control data into the LIS. Notify Reference Lab Services to fax results as needed and follow SOPs to fax results to outside locations when RLS is not available.
+ Assist with training and teaching MLS program students and new employees.
+ Be familiar with Departmental "Environment of Care" Policies, Workplace Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace and CQI.
+ Be familiar with and confidently use the Coagulation Lab procedure manuals, including those in Media Lab.
+ MLSs may be asked to perform other more specialized Coagulation testing and test development as needed and in accordance with training.
+ Perform testing on proficiency testing materials when asked by the Coagulation MLS Lead or by the MLS 2 in accordance with departmental SOPs.
+ Troubleshoot instrument issues and know when to call one of the groups that support the Coagulation lab (i.e., LabMed IT, Stago Support Hotline).
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
**_Hematology General Duties_** **:**
+ Perform Hematological analysis using Sysmex XN instruments.
+ Perform Hematological analysis such as differentials and smear scans using Cellavision and microscopes.
+ Use SP-50s for slide making and staining or manually make and stain the slide. Use Cytospin to make body fluid slides.
+ Use Caresphere middleware to review Hematological results and conduct other checks prior to validation and submission of those results to the LIS.
+ Perform Quantitative and Qualitative analysis body fluid cells using microscopes and counting chambers.
+ Be familiar with and use the Hematology Lab procedure manuals, including those in Media Lab.
+ Perform ESRs using the Excyte 20.
+ MLSs who are specially trained and licensed may be asked to perform other more specialized Hematology testing (i.e., assist with the acquisition and processing of Bone Marrow samples) and test development as needed.
+ Perform maintenance procedures daily, weekly and monthly on Hematology instruments in accordance with SOPs.
+ Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material in accordance with SOPs.
+ Perform testing on proficiency testing materials when asked by the Hematology MLS Lead or by one of the MLS2s in accordance with departmental SOPs.
+ Troubleshoot instrument issues, knowing when to call one of the groups that supports the Hematology lab (i.e., LabMed IT, Sysmex's TAC).
+ Enter patient and Quality Control data into the LIS. Notify Reference Lab Services to fax results as needed and follow SOPs to fax results to outside locations when RLS is not available.
+ Assist with training and teaching MLS program students and new employees.
+ Be familiar with Departmental "Environment of Care" Policies, Workplace Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace and CQI.
+ Process bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples, preparing them for transport to SCCA.
+ Distribute bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples to SCCA and other locations for testing, further processing, and evaluation.
+ Maintains the bone marrow bench area at UWMC.
+ Participate in demonstrating simple laboratory techniques to students and new employees.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
**What you'll need:**
_Requirements for an MLS Trainee_ :
+ Accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science OR equivalent education/experience AND
+ Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist or categorical certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 18 months from date of hire. Failure to attain the certification within 18 months of date of hire may result in a recommendation for termination.
_Requirements for an MLS 1_ :
+ Accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science OR equivalent education/experience AND

POSITION DUTIES:
Perform clinical laboratory tests in any one or a combination of areas as described in following sections of the laboratory: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and blood bank.
Calculate test results and measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
Notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.
Perform a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation.
Evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of laboratory tests.
Perform precise and accurate laboratory testing according to established laboratory procedures.

Set up and adjust laboratory equipment and apparatus.

Job Summary and Responsibilities Accurately analyzes and reports all tests ordered by the Medical Staff in a timely manner and according to laboratory procedures and regulatory guidelines to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Performs and reports waived, moderately complex, and highly complex test procedures on patient specimens adhering to the Section's Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accurate and timely reporting
Provides excellent patient care through clinical correlation of results, identification of patterns of bias, rapid notification of appropriate caregivers of critical values, and completion of testing within established turn-around-time limits
Ensures that major automated equipment is operational by performing required maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting procedures; including contacting of instrument vendor for assistance or repair
Performs required calibration and quality control procedures and maintains records to ensure tests are being performed within established parameters
Performs proficiency testing as assigned and review results with laboratory clinical leaders
Assists in evaluation and generation of compliant documentation for the validation of new procedures and equipment to provide the physician with the most current laboratory technology
Participates in opportunities for continuing education and/or teaching, training according to the Section Performance Standards to enhance technical skills of students, trainees, coworkers, and self
Responsible for inventory of supplies, including providing assistance with monitoring supplies, ordering, and placing received supplies into storage
Completes all work and resolves or appropriately passes ongoing issues to incoming staff within the scheduled shift
As a representative of CommonSpirit Health, utilizes professionalism and HumanKindness while communicating with physicians, hospital staff, patients, coworkers, other stakeholders in laboratory operations, and all members of the general public, whether in email, instant messaging, telephone, or face-to-face interactions

Job Requirements
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a biological or chemical science as defined by CLIA.
Required Licensure and Certifications:
Other state license not required
Certification Preferred:
MLS (ASCP) or equivalent (Per requirement sheet)
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training:
Must be appropriately trained in clinical laboratory science as evaluated by the Director of the Clinical Laboratory
