Hours:
Normal hours will be established by the work center and will be a 40-hour week, with an 8-hour day scheduled between the hours of 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday, depending on the blood drive schedule, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. Some blood drives require longer workdays, up to 12-hour days; in these cases, the HCW will be scheduled to work during the peak work hours and be transported back to the donor center or lodging site as to not exceed the 40-hour work week.
Responsibilities:
1 Rotates through various sections of the Blood Donor Center and on blood drives in remote locations. Independently performs standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking. The majority of work performed is covered in established standard operating procedure (SOP) and instructions, though occasionally will perform more complex procedures which are not covered in detail by existing documents. Maintains a professional attitude and communicates effectively with donors, patients, physicians, and fellow employees.
2 Performs personal interviews to obtain medical histories and visual inspections of blood donors, ensuring donors meet all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criteria and current manufacturing practices. Determines eligibility of potential donors based on judgment and in accordance with SOP and regulatory guidelines. Screens subjects donating blood (e.g., volunteer blood donors, autologous and therapeutic patients) and exercises care to ensure their blood is at a safe level prior to being used. Takes vital signs (i.e., temperature, pulse, and blood pressure) and checks hemoglobin and/or hematocrit levels, ensuring prospective donors are eligible to donate blood.
3 Strips, segments, weighs, and stores whole blood units. Records information, such as time of started and stopped drawing blood. Prepares samples to be sent to testing laboratory. Receives and reviews test results, ensuring proper procedures are followed if irregularities or tests discrepancies are found. Enters results into the computer system to update the files of blood donors and follow up log for serological testing of blood donor units. Inputs all data on the blood products in the computer system to ensure proper release and inventory of products. Labels units for shipment or storage in accordance with SOP to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of the release and use of the blood product.
4 Manufactures packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and recovered plasma in accordance with SOP. Maintains records on component preparations. Performs quality control tests for red blood cells, platelets, and instrumentation in accordance with SOP.
5 Stocks blood donor, blood processing, and blood product manufacturing supplies and mobile equipment. Ensures stock levels are adequate. Participates in mobile blood drives to remote sites. Operates and performs daily preventive maintenance, repair, and quality control on blood bank equipment (e.g., centrifuges, automated apheresis, venipuncture instruments).
6 Performs specialized tests on platelets for quality control in accordance with standards. Works with hazardous materials (e.g., infectious biological material) and adheres to established safety procedures to minimize potential danger to self and others. Operates various computers and computer systems, to include the computer control blood bank management system. Uses computer hardware and software programs to enter or recall data of donor registration and history, complete blood and component preparation, maintain test result tables, label units, control inventory, and ship blood products to the transfusion service. Records donor deferrals in the computer system per SOP. Maintains legible and accurate records in accordance with regulatory requirements for all procedures (e.g., test results, collection, preparation, processing, inventory, shipping, quality control). Collects and maintains quality control data and records as required.
7 Provides input to the supervisor in evaluating new instrumentation, procedures, and products for possible future use. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of immunohematology and of serological testing of donor units. Evaluates new techniques/equipment for use in the blood bank and provides recommendations. Participates in the training and orientation of new personnel (military and civilian), reserve military personnel, and students in blood banking theory and operations.
8 Phlebotomy Duties: Conducts second overall assessment of donors. Explains the procedures and prepares donor arm for phlebotomy. Screens candidates for autologous collections. Exercises independent judgment to ensure phlebotomy procedures will not harm the donor and that the collected blood is processed, tested, and available at the time of the patient's needs. Monitors donor during donation process and observes for possible adverse reaction (e.g., light headache, passing out, convulsing). Administers first aid or calls for medical help depending on the circumstances.
9 Apheresis Procedures: Processes human volunteer apheresis donors. Takes donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and collection of single donor plasma and single donor platelets using apheresis equipment and standard procedures.
Requirements
1. Degree/Education: Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
2. Certifications: Basic Life Support from a course approved by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
3. Board Certification: Certification/registration as Medical Laboratory Technicianor equivalent by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (ASDHA).
4. Experience: One year of experience in a clinical laboratory in any one or a combination of the following sections: hematology, chemistry, cytology, histology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank.

QUALIFICATIONS

Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician II (MLT II) in their role as testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT II), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Be a Doctor of Medicine, doctor of osteopathy, or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine, osteopathy, or podiatry in the State in which the laboratory is located.
Have earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, ormedical technology from an accredited institution.
Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, ormedical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Have education and training equivalent to an associate degree that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either:
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
24 semester hours of science courses that include: six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology; and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, ormedical laboratory technology in any combination.
AND
Have laboratory training that includes either of the following:
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS; or
At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

Complete demonstrations of capabilities as dictated by the laboratory.
Shall follow all laboratory policies and Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs).
As outline in 42 CFR 493, the testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.
Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
Each individual performing high complexity testing must:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

REQUIRED SKILLS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The Public Health Clinical Laboratory Technicians must qualify under one of the following options:
Be a Doctor of Medicine, doctor of osteopathy, or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine, osteopathy, or podiatry in the State in which the laboratory is located.
Have earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, ormedical technology from an accredited institution.
Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, ormedical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Have education and training equivalent to an associate degree that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either:
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
24 semester hours of science courses that include: six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology; and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, ormedical laboratory technology in any combination.
AND
Have laboratory training that includes either of the following:
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS; or
At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

In This Role:
You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.
You will be performing diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day.
You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas:
Hematology:
Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques.
Chemistry / Endocrinology:
Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation.
Urinalysis:
Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques.
Cytology:
Processing blood and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists. Includes slide preparation and staining, utilizing manual and automated counting techniques.
Immunology / Serology:
Testing blood and other samples for the presence of viral and bacterial disease by detecting antibodies (AB) or antigens (AG).
What Do You Need to Succeed?
You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred.
You have a skillset working with urine, fecal and blood samples
You will be working in Parasitology, Urinalysis and Chemistry
It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) orMedical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus.
Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and/or clinical diagnostic analyzers).

Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

Schedule:
The hours for this position are : 4AM - 8AM
The schedule for this position is : TUESDAY-SATURDAY
There will be an alternating Saturday night (every 3rd)
The hours for the rotating Saturday night will be during 3rd shift hours-Midnight-8:30am
If you work a Saturday night, then you will have a day off through the week
This is a part time, early morning position
This position will require 20-24hrs per week as a part time position
The shifts and hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.
Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.
