The Department of Pathology-Medical Center North Liberty is seeking a Medical Lab Technician to provide moderately and highly complex clinical lab testing and analysis on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Will use a variety of procedures that may involve numerous detailed tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment.. These positions are 100% time. Working hours will initially be M-F, 3rd shift (2230-0700 with rotating holidays and weekend potential) with primary duties to include instrument validation, SOP development and miscellaneous training activities, which could include training other technologists.
Duties to include:
* Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for both moderately and highly complex testing on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue/organ and body fluids.
* Dispenses blood products that are compatible for the patient being transfused.
* Dispenses tissue products to the OR.
* Prepares surgical specimens and other designated specimen types for transport to MCU. Prepares packing list/bill of lading as required/necessary.
* After consultation with/direction from a Decedent Care Specialist, and in collaboration with Safety/Security staff, releases decedents from the body hold cooler when necessary.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, or
* Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or
* Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Desirable Qualifications:
* Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable.
* Previous experience in a laboratory performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood baking, chemistry, hematology, and/or microbiology, which may include program training experience, is highly desired.

* Collaborates and communicates with primary care teams. Consults and communicates with members of external healthcare teams, customer service and patient education. Will be efficient in organization, able to set priorities, work as a team member and effectively complete assignments.
* Must locate and review patient orders in the computer system using VISTA or CPRS programs. Appropriately deletes and adds tests and properly documents in the VISTA system. Patients lacking or with unclear orders require multiple computer searches to identify orders or locate the ordering provider and contact them for clarification.
* Identifies tests that require special handling conditions and appropriately performs proper specimen collection.
* Manages or assists in the management of the metric screening assigned by CBOC supervisor or Ancillary Coordinator. Will perform miscellaneous minor duties as assigned.
* Takes emergency care procedures in the event a patient has a reaction to blood collection procedures including fainting, hematoma, and anxiety.
* Instructs and assists healthcare personnel as necessary regarding questions, but not limited to, patient testing, specimen collection, equipment, ordering requirements, incorporating principles of educational methodology, etc.
* Adheres to all facility, local, state and federal safety requirements.

The Shivanand R Patil Cytogenetics and Molecular lab, within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, is seeking a medical laboratory technician. The lab utilizes molecular and cytogenetic techniques, including chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) chromosomal microarray (CMA), and genome sequencing for diagnosis or treatment in cancer and constitutional genetic disorders. In this role, the laboratory technician will perform components of cytogenetic and molecular studies according to established laboratory protocols and work to maintain and improve the clinical testing environment, capabilities and quality of data in the laboratory.
This position is first shift (8am - 5pm) and must be able to accommodate approximately 5-6 Saturday workdays and one holiday every year as part of a rotating schedule with other technologists.
We intend to hire for one position at either the Cytogenetic Lab Specialist I, requisition #24005255, or Cytogenetic Lab Specialist II, requisition #24005256, or Medical Lab Tech, requisition #25005072 based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Position Responsibilities:
Perform high complexity testing on clinical biological specimens such as blood, bone marrow, tissue and body fluids.
Able to properly manage time based on established priorities.
Perform appropriate documentation and maintain accurate and legible records.
Perform routine quality control, maintenance, calibration, and assist in troubleshooting of laboratory instruments.
Evaluate quality control results and initiate corrective action when QC metrics are not acceptable.
Maintain inventory and orders supplies as needed.
Perform a variety of cytogenetic procedures that may include:
Cell culture and harvest
Slide preparation, chromosome banding and karyotype analysis.
FISH slide preparation and analysis.

Begin and ensure proper execution of analytic pipelines for both CMA and NGS clinical tests.

Counts all narcotics with another Medication Care Manager or Nurse each shift.

Follows re-fill process for medications.
Participates in the development of the Service Plan and monthly updates.
Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, weight, pulse and respiration rates.
Reports occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, sharp sticks and hazardous chemicals immediately.
Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications:
Certified Nurse's Aid certification preferred.

Duties to include:
Adhere to strict procedures and practice of safety precautions to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
Explain procedures to patients and family members in a professional and courteous manner.

Complete lab requisition orders and produce appropriate labels for specimen tubes in the LIS (laboratory information system).
Obtain blood specimens from patients as required using established blood-drawing techniques.

Perform moderate complexity or point of care testing following standard operating policies and procedures.
Assist with collection, labeling, and transportation of other laboratory specimens as necessary.
Record results in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.
Perform various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
Maintain inventory of supplies, materials and equipment.
Maintain and clean equipment and instruments as per established procedures and manufacturer's instructions.
Perform calibrations and proficiency testing and calibration verification as required.
Maintain records and documentation for proficiency testing and to meet CLIA requirements and regulations.
Assist in bone marrow biopsy collections.
Perform all other duties as assigned.

Duties to include:
* Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for both moderately and highly complex testing on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue/organ and body fluids.
* Dispenses blood products that are compatible for the patient being transfused.
* Dispenses tissue products to the OR.
* Prepares surgical specimens and other designated specimen types for transport to MCU. Prepares packing list/bill of lading as required/necessary.
* After consultation with/direction from a Decedent Care Specialist, and in collaboration with Safety/Security staff, releases decedents from the body hold cooler when necessary.

Care Giver:

Counts all narcotics with another Medication Care Manager or Nurse each shift.
Maintains and cleans the Medication Room, med charts, treatment carts for neatness cleanliness, availability of medications and expired medications.
Follows re-fill process for medications.
Participates in the development of the Service Plan and monthly updates.
Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, weight, pulse and respiration rates.
Reports occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, sharp sticks and hazardous chemicals immediately.
Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications:
Certified Nurse's Aid certification preferred.
High School diploma/GED
Must be 18 years of age.
CPR Certification preferred
First Aid Certification preferred
Previous experience working with seniors preferred.
