**_This recruitment offers a $3,000 - $4,000 sign-on bonus available for eligible new employees joining the UW Medicine team._** **Who we're looking for:** The **UW Medicine Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP)** in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a **Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee/1** with the **Coagulation & Hematology Division** at the University of WashingtonMedical Center: Montlake.
Our evening shift crew handles a very diverse population, including oncology patients from the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center, transplant patients, patients who need complicated cardiac care, and patients who need mechanical circulatory services. We see interesting results with these patients in both coagulation and in hematology. We also receive samples from multiple community clinics, so we see normal patient samples as well. Additionally, we conduct many body fluid cell counts and differentials.
In partnership with the University of Washington, we train MLS students during their clinical rotations as well as residents who will eventually run their own labs. Not only do we enjoy training others, but we also engage in continuing education opportunities to maintain our MLS certifications through MediaLab, MedTraining Services, and DLMP Grand Rounds and Research Rounds.

+ MLSs may be asked to perform other more specialized Coagulation testing and test development as needed and in accordance with training.

**_Hematology General Duties_** **:**
+ Perform Hematological analysis using Sysmex XN instruments.
+ Perform Hematological analysis such as differentials and smear scans using Cellavision and microscopes.
+ Use SP-50s for slide making and staining or manually make and stain the slide. Use Cytospin to make body fluid slides.
+ Use Caresphere middleware to review Hematological results and conduct other checks prior to validation and submission of those results to the LIS.
+ Perform Quantitative and Qualitative analysis body fluid cells using microscopes and counting chambers.
+ Be familiar with and use the Hematology Lab procedure manuals, including those in Media Lab.
+ Perform ESRs using the Excyte 20.
+ MLSs who are specially trained and licensed may be asked to perform other more specialized Hematology testing (i.e., assist with the acquisition and processing of Bone Marrow samples) and test development as needed.
+ Perform maintenance procedures daily, weekly and monthly on Hematology instruments in accordance with SOPs.
+ Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material in accordance with SOPs.

+ Be familiar with Departmental "Environment of Care" Policies, Workplace Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace and CQI.
+ Process bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples, preparing them for transport to SCCA.
+ Distribute bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples to SCCA and other locations for testing, further processing, and evaluation.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Must qualify as General Supervisor, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations.
Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is preferred.
A minimum of 55 years of laboratory technical experience,, with at least 22 years in immunohematology reference testing,, is required (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
A minimum of three years of laboratory supervisor or Lead experience is preferred.

Serve as initial consult to external laboratory personnel and physicians regarding the clinical significance of results, with support from Bloodworks Medical Staff.
Participate in developing the department's annual personnel and operating budget. Administer the budget with emphasis on optimal use of the resources and waste reduction.
Rotate as the on-call supervisor and be available for consultation after hours.
Utilize LEAN principles to manage inventories of reagents, supplies, and other resources, to minimize waste and maximize efficiency.
Identify opportunities and implement process improvements and best practices to ensure efficient work methods. Coordinate the evaluation of alternate reagents and equipment for potential future process integration.
With the Laboratory Manager, CLIA Director, Vice President, and/or staff, establish departmental performance metrics and quality indicators. Communicate performance to the laboratory.
Assure staff are customer-focused and understand customers' needs. Resolve customer service issues in collaboration with the Manager, CLIA Director, and/or Vice President.
Assure Quality and Regulatory Standards are met.
Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as written.
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Assure quality practices are followed, and error reporting is documented.
Investigate and document occurrences that contribute to errors, accidents, or adverse outcomes, including risk assessment. Report results to the manager in a timely fashion. Recommend and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and process improvements when identified. Utilize technical resources to assist in problem resolution and remediation.
Authors and/or participate in the qualification and validation of new/revised processes, equipment, and software.
Participate as part of the management team in laboratory accreditation inspections, and internal and external audits.
Monitor work practices to ensure adherence to current Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), that quality control is performed, and that equipment is maintained.
Coordinate the completion of Proficiency Testing (PT) CAP/AABB Surveys. Ensures rotation of proficiency testing among all staff. Directly reports survey results to CAP/AABB or delegates to the appropriate Lead Scientist.
Ensure the integrity of written and electronic records generated by the department.
Coordinate laterally within Transfusion Services to ensure processes are optimized, resources are appropriately used, and quality practices are consistently applied.
Oversee 24-hour REES monitoring for equipment, in concert with Managers.
Develop written standard operating procedures as assigned.
Assure a safe work environment by reviewing existing safety practices, developing new ones, communicating with staff, and ensuring compliance. Evaluate safety reports and remediate problems.
Ensures that employees are scheduled appropriately to complete CLIA Competency Assessments and that such assessments are completed on time.
Operational Support
Participate in interdepartmental project teams when the scope of those projects affects IRL's daily operations.
Partner with laboratory leadership for the implementation of genomics testing into laboratory processes.
Assure the coordination of the screening, typing, packing, and/or shipment of rare units and rare plasma/serum samples for national exchange.
Process unusual or complex service or information requests. Consult with laboratory leadership regarding these requests as applicable.
Coordinate special research and development projects.
Maintain software/electronic applications used for daily operations (Antigen Plus, maintain Macros, rare donor list, etc.).
Coordinate training of medical fellows during rotation and daily report review with the Medical Director and trainees.
As needed, assist the program director for the MT/MLT or SBB programs to provide lectures or practical training to students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Must qualify as General Supervisor, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations.
Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is preferred.
A minimum of five years of laboratory technical experience, with at least two years in immunohematology reference testing, is required (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
A minimum of three years of laboratory supervisor or Lead experience is preferred.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrated expertise in immunohematology reference testing.
Basic knowledge of molecular techniques is preferred.

The Clinical Lab Technologist position will be responsible for processing medically relevant biological samples through extraction and/or high throughput next-generation DNA sequencing assays. Lab Assistant are also responsible for adhering to HIPAA standards and strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace. This is a float position and will require travelling to other sites.
Position Schedule: Monday - Friday with varying hours from 7:00am - 6:30pm to cover other Seattle Sites including Cherry Hill, First Hill, Issaquah and Ballard.
Essential Duties:
May perform any of the following duties or groups of duties:
Intakes and accession specimens accurately and timely
Schedules and assists with patient procedures performed at the hospital which may include but are not limited to FNA procedures, bone marrow biopsies, CT/US procedures, etc.
Assists the pathologists with intraoperative evaluations such as frozen sections
Assists Pathologists with specimen and workstation prep
Assists in sending out material to other institutions
Provides support in resolution center
Assists with quality assurance and fulfilling compliance requirements
Provides pathologists support which includes but is not limited to slide distribution and manifest, conference prep, pending lists, and triaging phone calls
Assists with autopsy prep as needed
Delivers specimens to relevant sites/departments and assists couriers as needed
Perform maintenance and daily operational tasks
Provides cross coverage to other hospital sites as needed

The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner.

This position is critical to quality for customer satisfaction. Additionally, since many changes do occur from day to day, great flexibility on the part of the SPT I is required. The SPT I will be exposed to many different demands made by the customer. Majority of SPT I work, on the nightshift, but based on staffing needs weekends, holidays, on call and overtime is a requirement. Department is a production environment, with emphasis on productivity/quality standards and departmental completion times. Prior medical exp. Highly desirable.
