LOCATION: 10 Risho Avenue East Providence, RI

Entry-level role; professional experience is not required. Internships, academic projects, or equivalent experience are welcome

Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform both waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, they carry out all policies and perform all tests in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures. They work independently in an efficient and organized manner to ensure accurate results and records. This role requires a professional level of knowledge to accurately read and interpret test results used by providers in diagnosing and treating diseases.
As General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II may be delegated responsibility for the day-to-day supervision or oversight of laboratory operations and the personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, they are also responsible for supervising assigned workstations, including Quality Control (QC) review, staff training, competency assessments, and inventory management.
Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of results. Each individual performs only those tests authorized by the laboratory director that require a level of skill aligned with their education, training, experience, and technical abilities.

Essential Functions
After completion of orientation, training, and competency assessment on instruments and methods applicable to their role, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II must:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are analyzed in the same manner as patient samples.
Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow established corrective action policies whenever test systems fall outside acceptable performance ranges.
Identify issues that may adversely affect test performance or results, and either correct them or promptly notify the appropriate supervisor or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible to provide comprehensive health services to DOS, DOD, and contractor personnel stationed in Iraq. The MLT performs lab tests and procedures, mostly comprising of microscopic, bacteriological, hematologic, immunologic, and chemical diagnostic analyses on samples of tissue, blood, urine, stool, synovial fluid and semen. About the Elliot Hospital Laboratory:
The Elliot Hospital Laboratory is a full service 24/7 operation. We are both CAP and AABB accredited. In addition to traditional inpatient and outpatient work, the laboratory supports a Level II trauma center, Level III NICU, High Risk Maternity unit, three urgent cares, two cancer centers, a community health center and approximately 60 nursing and assisted living facilities. Our yearly billable volume is approximately 1.6 million tests.

The Medical Lab Scientist/Medical Technologist work as part of the healthcare team to provide our patients with the best possible care. Staff work together with each other, patient providers and our Pathologists to help determine clinical outcomes for our patients. Our technical departments are state of the art with up to date instrumentation including, molecular microbiology, Rotem coagulation technology, a full chemistry line with refrigeration and up to date, histology and cytology departments.
What You'll Do
1. Accurately and precisely perform laboratory tests and maintain the integrity of samples throughout the process.
2. Notify appropriate clinical personnel in the event of critical or life threatening results.
3. Maintain records and documentation in order to adhere to regulations set forth by regulatory agencies such as JACHO, CAP, Medicare, Medicaid and Elliot Hospital Laboratory policies and procedures.
4. Resolve and document procedural problems encountered in the daily workload.
What You'll Need

This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. Major Responsibilities:
Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Laboratory Technicians in the interpretation of complex testing or unusual findings.
Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.
Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results.
Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas.
Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data.
Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results.
Recognizes critical and /or life-threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy.
Resolves and documents procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems.
Maintains all records and documentation needed to comply with TJC, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and hospital laboratory regulations.
Orients and instructs new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
May perform duties of charge technologist in the absence of the supervisor. May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections.
Obtains and processes specimens from patients as required using established techniques.
Assists in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
Assists with maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties. Notifies appropriate person when supply levels fall to reorder levels.
