Assigned responsibilities:
Reviews and evaluates daily and periodic Quality Control testing and procedures.
Ensures performance of periodic instrument maintenance and departmental quality control procedures. Coordinates CAP survey performance and reporting.
Assists with creation of validation plans as may be required for equipment or procedures, and ensures completion of validation package for final review.
Performs Meditech validation exercises as may be required with system upgrades or site specific changes. Ensures department is prepared for planned Meditech downtime.
Monitors transfusion activity at contracted transfusion service client sites for regulatory compliance; may be required to make periodic site visits.
Acts as liaison with Nursing Education to evaluate and/or update mandatory training material. May be asked to assist with creating lessons. Assists with ensuring Blood Bank policies are appropriately posted to SEMC MCN Policy Manager.
Ensures blood product inventory levels are adequate for transfusion support and works to reduce product wastage.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree in medical technology or related science and 3-5 years' full time experience as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform both waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, they carry out all policies and perform all tests in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures. They work independently in an efficient and organized manner to ensure accurate results and records. This role requires a professional level of knowledge to accurately read and interpret test results used by providers in diagnosing and treating diseases.
As General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II may be delegated responsibility for the day-to-day supervision or oversight of laboratory operations and the personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, they are also responsible for supervising assigned workstations, including Quality Control (QC) review, staff training, competency assessments, and inventory management.
Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of results. Each individual performs only those tests authorized by the laboratory director that require a level of skill aligned with their education, training, experience, and technical abilities.

Essential Functions
After completion of orientation, training, and competency assessment on instruments and methods applicable to their role, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II must:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are analyzed in the same manner as patient samples.
Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow established corrective action policies whenever test systems fall outside acceptable performance ranges.
Identify issues that may adversely affect test performance or results, and either correct them or promptly notify the appropriate supervisor or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

4. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies. Identifies aberrant patient test results and takes appropriate action; seeks assistance in resolution as needed. Documents all corrective action steps.
5. Participates in QA/QI activities as required. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples. Documents errors using hospital Safety Reporting System; informs supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered.
6. Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily tasks and objectives. Supports and assists coworkers as needed to ensure the best possible patient care; able to work independently while functioning as a team member.

Job Responsibilities
Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality

Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls

Requirements

Blood Bank experience is required
ASCP or AMT certification is preferred
Extensive experience in blood bank and general lab required
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus
High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen

What You'll Need to Succeed:
You are able to work the overnight shift
Veterinary or Human Laboratory Skillset is a must to be considered for this position
Skillset in Chemistry, Hematology, Serology or Urinalysis
Must have excellent pipetting skills
You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred.
It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus.
You will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).
