This position provides technical support in the Flow Cytometry Laboratory to complete laboratory testing for OHSU hospital and clinic patients. The incumbent will be a qualified Medical Laboratory Technician with generalist experience or equivalent capable of performing laboratory testing and associated activities needed to support the technical services provided by the Flow Cytometry Lab. The person in this position is authorized to perform testing in the following areas: bone marrow assists and slide staining, moderate and high complexity testing. Specimen processing, and result reporting is performed independently, after appropriate training. Supervisor or director review of results is required in situations dictated by policy or procedures. The person filling this position will be of professional demeanor and perform their duties with an attitude, which will best serve the clients of the department. Function/Duties of Position Performs testing with accuracy, speed, and efficiency. Follows written procedures and policies. Bone marrow Bench, Schedules appointments for bone marrow assists. Performs bone marrow assistance at the bedside for physicians performing bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, according to written procedures. Observes the aspiration, determines if the specimen is adequate, prepares slides, prepares or preserves specimen for additional testing as needed. Stains slides using both manual and automated methods and prepares specimen, slides, and paperwork for pathologist's review. Prepares reagents, performs quality control checks, and troubleshoots procedures as needed. Checks all slides for adequate staining and appropriate morphology Prepares samples for testing. Determines acceptability of specimens and results. Repeats analysis as necessary to insure accuracy. Reports test results via computer and telephone. Calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and procedures. Other Duties as Assigned Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Lab Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Chemical or Biological field, and current certification MT (ASCP), or MLS (ASCP) within 90 days of hire. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. OR Completion of a 2-year accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, plus MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 90 days of hire, and 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological field, and four years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical laboratory performing testing and related tasks. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE Provides safe, effective, quality medical laboratory services to infant, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients in accordance with professional standards. Performs analyses that require a complex network of steps and variables. Confirms and verifies results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments. Correlates and interprets data based on knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results. Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs. EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must be actively following or have completed a Medical Laboratory Scientist approved route to meet eligibility criteria for certification. ASCP, AMT or equivalent certified Medical Laboratory Scientist required within six (6) months of hire. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES Analytical/Problem Solving Skills - Ability to collect and analyze data and other information, solve problems and make decisions while using clear and logical steps. Clinical Laboratory Technology - Working knowledge in areas of laboratory medicine and technology including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology. Quality Assurance Fundamentals - Basic knowledge and understanding of clinical quality assurance and quality control techniques and activities. In This Role: * You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes, and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries, and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment. * You will be performing diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal, or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day. * You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). * You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas: * Hematology: Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques. * Chemistry / Endocrinology: Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation. * Urinalysis: Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques. * Cytology: Processing blood and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists. Includes slide preparation and staining, utilizing manual and automated counting techniques. * Immunology / Serology: Testing blood and other samples for the presence of viral and bacterial disease by detecting antibodies (AB) or antigens (AG). What You'll Need To Succeed: * Ideally, you will have 3-5+ years' experience working in a high-volume clinical diagnostic laboratory setting up, running, reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers) * You have experience using a microscope to review slides, identifying the various elements of a sample, and releasing results. * You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues * You enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team * You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely * You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility * You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred. * It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus. * Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. * This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.
